Five: Moving On

The next day was a struggle. There was only one thought that ran through my head over and over again. Did I like Peter Parker?

The weekend had gone by quick and it was Monday now. The Avengers kept pestering me about school and asking me to tell them about Peter. Seems like Nat couldn't keep it to herself. I'm just glad my Dad hadn't figured it out yet. He's oblivious to the simple things that go around the house. My answer always stayed the same either way, "School was great'' and "Peter's just a friend." My mind was trying to get me to believe that the more I say it, the more it's true. But that wasn't the case. Every thought, every move, everything went back to the adorable boy that stammered when he was nervous, but couldn't stop talking when he started.

I left for school early that day to escape any more interrogations. I decided to stop at the bakery near home and got a few donuts before entering the place most people call hell. I barely made it in two feet before being stopped by Gwen. "Hey, Malia! Ready for your second week?" she asked. I never knew how she was glowing all the time, carry the positive attitude.

"Not really, why does school start so early? When I was homeschooled I only started in the afternoon."

"Well the concept of school was made to torture kids and keep them out of trouble while their parents were at work, I wish we started that late," she replied with a small laugh.

We walked down the halls when I saw a boy holding a huge poster for a girl that read "Homecoming?" She had tears in her eyes and was smiling. "Hey Gwen, what's homecoming?" I asked her. She burst out in laughter.

"Oh my god! You're kidding right?" she asked. I shook my head, confused at her response.

"Can you just tell me what it is without making fun of me?"

"Alright, I'm just playing with you, Malia. I'd be glad to show you the normal high school life. Homecoming's just a dance where you bring a date or just go with friends. Kinda like a huge party for the school. It's to celebrate the return of our football team. You can tag along with Flash and me. Or you could go with Michelle, Peter, Ned, and Harry. Unless you wanna go with someone else."

"Oh, that sounds great." We parted ways as I went to my first class. I sat down next to Peter and Ned. They were too deep in conversation to realize I had come.

"So are you gonna ask her to the dance?" Ned asked Peter who was staring at a girl in the distance.

"I don't know she's already busy with the decathlon and planning the dance itself. Plus she probably already has a date, and just look at her. Who wouldn't want to take her to a dance? Why would she go with a little scrawny freshman when she can go with anyone in the whole school?"

I felt a pang in my heart as he said that. He was an amazing guy. It was the other way around. Any girl would be lucky to go with him. It hurt to know that he liked another girl. Maybe my feelings for him were stronger than I thought. I guess it would be better to stay as friends. "Hey guys," I said to the now quiet boys.

"Hey didn't see you come in," Ned replied, acknowledging my presence. Peter, on the other hand, was busy drooling on his desk. Ned nudged him in his side pointing to me, trying to get his attention.

"Did Liz get a new shirt. I've never seen that one before." Ned now elbowed him hard on his rib. "Ow, what? Oh hey, Malia, sorry I was just um studying for stuff," he said trying to hide the fact that he was staring at Liz. I decided to keep a positive attitude. This kid was my friend after all. I'd just have to forget about my little crush and move on.

"More like studying a girl, go man up and ask her out Peter. She probably likes you too." It took everything in me to say it to him, but it's what had to be said. All I wanted was for him to be happy and if that meant taking Liz to homecoming then that's what he needs to do.

"Pshh what girl? What's a girl? Who? I have no idea what you're talking about.....ok fine I'll admit it I like her, but what if she says no or says yes out of pity or-"

I stopped Peter before he started to ramble too much. "Peter you're a great guy. Any girl would be lucky to go with you. Now grow some balls and ask the damn girl out." He grew a light shade of pink.

"Ok maybe I'll ask her after our trip to D.C." he replied, getting out his books for class to begin.
