THE NEXT DAY

"so what are we going to do for luna's birthday?" i ask ethan.

"oh, when's her birthday?" my dad asks, pouring coffee into his mug.

"this weekend," ethan answers. "and i don't know what we should do. i know my parents are going to want to see her."

i nod. "we should just go over to your parents' house and have a cake and pizza. family only."

"we should invite amy, too," my dad tells me.

"yeah. she's never met luna and i know she'd love to." i smile, looking to see if ethan agrees.

"it won't be too hard for her?" ethan asks.

i guess i never thought about that. but we've talked about luna before and she's been okay about it.

"i think she'll be okay. i'll still check with her, though."

ethan finishes his pancakes, getting up to put the plate in the sink. i pour more syrup onto mine.

"hey dad, are you working today?" i ask him.

he nods. "yep. i'm working a late shift today, actually."

"okay. i guess i'll see you this weekend then? at ethan's parents' house."

"sounds good." he walks over to me, giving me a quick hug and then waving at us and walking to the front door.

ethan stands next to the table, leaning against one of the chairs. "are you almost done?"

i smile. "no, i'm not. it's not my fault you inhale your pancakes."

"no i don't. you just take microscopic bites."

i ignore him and continue to eat my pancakes. i hear ethan sigh, sitting in the chair across from me.

even while looking down at my food, i know he's just watching me eat.

"ethan, stop staring at me."

"what else am i supposed to do?"

"i don't know. go watch your baby sleep."

he laughs. "i'd rather watch you."

i roll my eyes, glaring at him. "you know i hate it when you stare at me. it's weird."

"why is it weird? you stare at me, too." he grins cheesily.

i ignore him and finally finish my food and stand up, putting my plate in the sink. then i walk into the living room and collapse on the couch.

i think i'm having a food coma from all the pancakes.

i rest my hand on my stomach, trying to get comfortable. i see ethan show up out of the corner of my eye, walking over to me with his hands on his hips.

"are you okay?" he furrows his eyebrows at me.

"yeah, i'm just really full." i finally find a comfortable spot laying on my back.

ethan grins, his cheekbones becoming more prominent. he walks closer and then lays on top of me, snuggling his head into my stomach.

"e, you're so heavy." his body weight presses against me, making the pressure in my stomach even worse.

he ignores me, hugging my torso with his strong arms. i play with the soft curly hairs at the nape of his neck, trying to let myself relax.

i can feel every time he breathes, slow and even. he sighs against me and holds me tighter.
