Harmony and I met in last summer when she moved here from Washington. She was my date to junior prom. Besides hockey, Harmony took up most of my time when she wasn't at student council meetings or working on the clubs that she was either president or vice president in. She was from a rich family that lived on the south side of town in all the big houses with in a gated community. Her dad was a lawyer and her mom a midwife.
I was pretty sure neither of them liked me. Her dad was a big man that looked a bit like David Otunga, Which was ironic because I'm pretty sure he was a lawyer too.
Go figure.
Harmony was amazing. She had great skin, great hair, beautiful brown eyes. She was some one that most straight men wanted to be with. She was the president of most of
the major clubs, and those she wasn't in change of she was likely she vise president."Their making you study with Henry? Why not just study with me? I can totally teach you the art of French." Harmony said as we both sat outside on a picnic table for lunch, she popped a fry into her mouth before smiling at me "Je peux vous apprendre quelque chose de bébé"
"Um, what?"
"I said, I can teach you anything. Stop by my place tonight and we can start studying. I promise I'll make it fun for us." She leaned in closer as she whispered the last part, her lips grazing my cheek. And as tempted as it sounded, I knew I wouldn't learn anything from her. She didn't have to patient to teach me. I wasn't exactly an easy student.
"That's okay Harm. Let me give Henry a chance and if that doesn't work, well then I can just join an off school hockey team and drop out."
"Matthew." She scolded giving off her signature pout. "You know if you drop out we wont be able to see each other anymore. My parents already hate that you grades are garbage if you drop out there would be no chance."
Ouch.
"Listen Harm, I better get going. I told Liam I'd stop by and give him the ten I owe him. I'll see you later yeah?" I stood up grabbing my bag and kissed her on the forehead. "See you later." I walked back inside, not really hearing her reply and went left to the gym hallway, knowing well that all my friends would be either eating lunch with their girlfriends of working out at the school's gym. About five guys from the team of sixteen were in the gym working out besides a couple of people that were clearly not students, as our gym was opened to the public. Our school was massive, and connected to a large community center that held our two hockey rinks, a swimming pool that had two kiddie pools, a drive tank, two big slides and a jungle gym. Plus we had a shared library. Lucky for me Liam was among the group of athletes working out. And no, the other eleven players on the team didn't all have girlfriends. But they did have other friends outside of the team.
Liam Cam was one of my best friends, on and off the ice. We both played on the same team from youth hockey team and followed it into high school. He the tallest kid in his family, standing at 6'2" and was the only Korean player on our team. He was one of the best defense men we had.
Liam was on his back lifting with the bench press when I want over and sat on the one adjacent to his. He was dressed in loose gym shorts and a red t-shirt that had the sleeves cut off.
"Dude, do you eat lunch at all?"
"I had a protein shake before I got here-" Bar up. "And I'll have three eggs-" Bar down. "After my shower." Bar up.
"Dude you have like, fifteen minutes left until class starts again."
"Five minutes here-" Bar up again. "Ten minutes to shower change and eat.-" Bar down. "Whats up Matt?"
"Nothing dude. I just needed some air from Harmony, She's on one of her 'if you quit school we can't be together.' binges. I had to get away from her."
"Matt." He was sitting up now, his knees almost touching mine. "You straddle a C average. You-"
"C+"
Liam rolled his eyes. "Fine, a C+ average, you're failing a class your own mother teaches and the only reason you haven't been booted from the team is because you're the best player and captain. Plus who cares what Harmony says. She's a high end bitch anyways. You need a low key kind of girl, not one that always makes you feel stupid. When was the last time she wen't to one of our games?"
"She doesn't like the cold."
"Dude, nobody likes the cold. I don't even like the cold. She treats you like shit bro."
It was my turn to roll my eyes. Liam said that time and time again. Okay, sure. Yes. Harm was rich, she was a bit stuck up and maybe she was spoiled. But we had a good thing going on. And didn't every couple have flaws? Why should I nit pick hers if she, may or may not nit pick mine.
Yeah she totally nit picks me all the time.
But I am a jock and I can be pretty brainless.
"Plus, you said last weekend she hasn't put out in forever. Why are you sticking around."
It wasn't her that wasn't putting out.
"Not everything is about sex Liam."
"Sure, and my mom doesn't iron all her shirts twice a day."
"And that's why you're single."
"I'm single because my mom irons my shirts?"
"Shut up Liam." I laughed while Liam gave off a chuckle putting a towel over his shoulders and headed towards the locker rooms, where I bid him a goodbye and made my way out to my next class.
Which just so happened to be French.
Fuck me.
