"And then after my nail appointment we can go to dinner, or a movie in the mall. It's totally up to you."
I'd really rather stay in and watch a movie. "Do I really need to be there while you get your nails done?" I'd rather put screws into my eyes.
"Of course you do. You need to help me pick a colour."
"I can tell you a colour now."
"It's not the same Matty."
I rolled my eyes looking around Harmony's overly large room. Her bed had those weird rails that touched the ceiling painted in white, with white sheets and light pink walls. For such a big room it was pretty empty. She had two double door closets that hid most of her clothes, a makeup table. White of course. A big furry pink rug that I honestly loved because it was so soft. "Why don't you go get your nails done. I'll go to Sports Chek, you can facetime me in time for the colour and then we'll go to Mario's for dinner?"
Harmony let out a huff but agreed anyway. We both made our way to the mall, I dropped her off at the nail salon before B-lining it to Sports Chek. I didn't actually need anything I just liked to look at what was on sale and what was new on the market. I guess it's basically what a broke girl does when she goes to the mall.
About half an hour later Harmony called me and I made way back to the salon to pick her up and we both walked across the road to Mario's. A small Italian restaurant that was pretty popular with the everyone at school. It was the go-to place for a date because it was so close to the mall plus affordable.
It was past five on a Saturday so the place was bound to be busy. We waited in line for what felt like forever (it was really five minutes but who's counting) and we were seated on the far side overlooking the rest of the busy restaurant. The booth we sat in was comfortable, on a lifted platform next to the kitchen, but it wasn't a loud with the wall reaching high and glass window between us and all the food. Mario's was a fancier place to eat, but still had no dress code and it had a bar on the other side for watching games. The eating area was dimly lit with high ceilings and dark walls. It was the perfected dating spot if you wanted to impress but also stay cheap.
Harm ordered the same thing every time we came here. She would order the Pennine Arrabiata, while I opted for something different every time. Looking at the menu I decided to try the Scaloppini Dijonnaise with lemon. Harmony looked amazing tonight. Her hair was straight down her back showing off her latest wig, because as her boyfriend I've known for a while that the chances of her hair being real if it passed her shoulders were slim to none. But I didn't mind because it was still her and she still looked great. She had on a pale pink shirt that highlighted her dark complexion and high waisted jeans on, and her makeup was subtle but still made her stand out. I was lucky to be with her. And I told myself that all the time, every time I fucked up or she pissed me off I reminded myself that I was lucky she was mine. Because a girl like her could have any guy she wanted, and for some reason she wanted me.
"Hey isn't that Henry?"
And just like that I forgot about my beautiful girlfriend and looked into the crowd of tables to see Henry Oswald sitting in the corner next to a floor to ceiling window with a big grin on his face while he drank something out of a big glass. But that wasn't what got me. It was who was with him. Though I couldn't see the face of the woman across from him, I could tell she was pretty, with long blond hair that fell in waves, and beside her was another guy with short dark hair. Then, beside Henry was another guy, a really good looking guy with his hair parted to the side and a leather jacket on, he kept bumping his shoulders with Henry which in turn made them both laugh. Their laughter could be heard from all across the dining area, right to my ears where I sat with Harmony. "Didn't realize Henry actually had friends." Harmony remarked with a malic voice.
"What makes you think Henry didn't have any friends?" I turned my attention back to her, trying to fight whatever feeling was taking over my gut and making me less and less hungry, even after the waiter set our plates down in front of us.
"It's Henry Oswald. Even his name is weird. I've never seen the guy hang out with anyone from our school. I don't know where that group came from."
"I see Henry with people all the time."
"Yeah, people who parents pay him to teach." Harmony laughed like she had said the funniest thing in the word. But to me, it wasn't funny.
Once upon a time, I would have joined in on picking fun at Henry, he was in all sense of the word. An outcast. Or at least that what he looked like to somebody on the outside. But as somebody who once knew him, and who was getting to know him again, Henry was a pretty awesome person. He was smart, funny, talented, and caring. He didn't treat me like a dumb jock, but rather like we were just meeting again and he knew nothing about me. It was like we were starting fresh again.
So now it begged the question, who was he with. Who was the good-looking guy that kept making eyes at Henry while Henry shied away and laughed? And why couldn't I stop looking?
