I wanted to say sitting across from Jorden at Good Earth wasn't awkward. But... It was really awkward. At first at least. It was like he was still reeling from Henry, his hackles were raised and his guard was up as we walked to the car, the music was low during our three-minute drive to the coffee shop. It was like he couldn't relax, wouldn't. His shoulder was tense and he was looking all over the place like someone was going to come out of nowhere and nab him.
It took about five minutes of sitting in quiet before I finally snapped and put my coffee down, giving him the stink eye. "You ask me to talk, and so far all you've done his act like a dog off his leash. What's going on?"
Jorden looked caught off guard by my comment like he forgot I was actually here. He sighed, rubbing a hand on his jeans a few times before putting that hand on the table and looked at me. "I'm sorry about that. There's just something about that guy that I don't like." Jorden looked a little ashamed of his words. But I couldn't help but laugh a little looking at him.
I reached a hand over the table, patting his for a second before taking my coffee in my hands. "Henry is harmless." I smiled. "We grew up together, but he loved to LA in high school, not sure why he's in Vancouver. But I haven't seen him in years, well except for the night of the party. He was the one who sat at the table with us. Strange stroke of fate." Jorden looked at my hand, his lips parted before looking up at my face and nodding.
"The guy you left with?"
"I thought I left with you. I actually have no idea how I ended up with Henry."
"We got into the cab and you were talking nonsense about a painting. Then this guy came over with his mask still on and started talking to the driver. You practically dove into his arms when he came to the back door. He offered for me to go with you guys, but I had already given the cabby my house number and I needed to be home for Molly in the morning Jordan explained, then took a long sip of his coffee
"Look Matt. I'm a pretty open guy and I... I'm not sure how to say this to you." I raised a brow to Jorden, it wasn't like him to be lost for words... Like it had said, he was normally an open, outspoken guy. I didn't want to push him so I had just waited for him to collect himself and. It took a moment, but before long he took a long breath, his eyes meeting mine. "I'm bisexual, that's not what I wanted to tell you but I figured it was a good start. My feelings were nothing new to me, but after the party, I got this feeling that you aren't exactly straight either."
Was this a test? This was a test, right? I'd tell him I was gay and before you know it Joey is lighting my ass on fire, I'll be all over TV in a scandal as the first out NHL player, my sponsors will drop me and I'll end up homeless living next to the Bow River under the bridge.
The panic must have been on my face because Jorden started to call out my name and give my free hand a little shake. "Hey, hey don't freak out. Matthew, I wouldn't tell anybody. I just. I really like you and I wanted to make sure I had a chance."
"Had, a chance?" I looked at Jorden, who was now closer then he was before, his face pressed in a panic, brows knitted together like he wasn't sure that I would run or not.
It wasn't the face of somebody who would out me to the whole world.
Or I hoped it wasn't.
"Well yeah," He let out a little awkward laugh. "I really like you, Matt, I wanted to ask you out on a -- date if you were... Interested." I couldn't help laughing along with Jorden, Illbit a little shakey, but I did laugh. Before shaking my head.
"You're an idiot," I said trying not to smile.
"What?"
"You couldn't do this somewhere a little less... crowded?"
"Well, I just thought-"
"Where would this date be?"
"Is that a yes?"
"You'll just have to wait until we're actually alone," I smirked and stood up, grabbing my coffee. "I better get home, I'm sure Henry will be there early if he is anything like he was before. I'll catch you later." I couldn't help looking back at Jorden as I walked away with the little smile on my face, and the secret smile on his.
Halfway home Henry had texted me for my address and told me he'd be by in an hour. Which gave me enough time to shower and dress before my doorbell rang and I had to buzz him in. My palms were wet but it wasn't from the shower anymore.
I was going on a date with Jorden soon. Jorden liked me. Things with Henry were pure history. I could do this. I could tell him that whatever happened Saturday was a mistake and that we were better off the friends we once were.
That was the plan.
I opened the front door and was met with about one hundred red roses with feet standing in the doorway. And the plan went flying out the window.
