"Wake up, Princess!" I groaned as Bells flung my shades to the side and the morning sun flooded my room, blinding me. I brought the white blanket over my head as she danced around the room getting things ready. "You have brunch today with a young man. Your mother insisted I get you ready!" I groaned again.
"Brunch with who?" I asked, finally sitting up. Bells eyes widened at my hair that was a mess on top of my head. I just smiled as I swung my feet to the floor. I grabbed my contact case on the way to my bathroom, the carpet plush beneath my feet.
"The prince from the South." I stared at the blue eyes that watched me back in the mirror.
"Like Prince Frosts?" I asked, opening the door and standing in the doorway. Bells had my chair pulled back from the vanity, expecting me to sit.
She looked at me confused and nodded. "What other prince is in the south?"
"Hm." Was all I said as I sat down.
My mother couldn't possibly want me to end up with him of all people. He was nasty to his people and he was nasty to me. I thought he was lying through his teeth that my mother invited him because she wants us to rule together as well. The clock hit eleven am as Bells was putting the final touches on me. I sat in a baby blue ball gown, half the size of the one I wore yesterday, that was covered in Pearls along the hem of the skirt. The tiara had matching pearls that were almost hidden by my white hair that was up in a curled bun.
"Okay done. You look beyond beautiful as always." Bells gushed as she looked me over. I smiled at her efforts, but inside I was a raging storm waiting to be unleashed.
I threw the doors open to the dining hall where I was instructed to go. Frosts sat at the table, sipping a class of water as he listened to my mother chat. She sat at the head of the table, looking glam as always. Their conversation froze as the doors banged against the wall and noticed me standing in the doorway.
"Well that's a fun entrance," Frosts said.
"Solstice!" My mother hissed the same time he spoke. I stared my mother down as I walked along the long table.
"Mother," I said, bowing dramatically. I heard her breath hitch. I sat in the chair across Frosts, not even waiting for someone to pull it out.
"Frosts had requested to a brunch since he did not get to talk to you at the dance last night," my mother said, eyeing me. I shrugged, looking over the pancakes and delicious food that covered the table.
"I was busy," I replied.
"With your bodyguard maybe." I shot Frosts a look only to be greeted by his smile and pointed teeth. He didn't give my turning red mother a chance to respond as he turned to her. "May we be alone now?"
I watched her leave the room, her steps graceful and quiet against the marble floor.
"Princess Solstice, you didn't come back for my dance." I snapped my attention back to him. He was cutting his pancakes with an eyebrow raised at me.
"When will you get that I don't like you?" I asked, my stomach growling at the delicious food on my plate below me.
"I thought royalty was supposed to pretend to like others for business purposes, no? What if you needed me in a battle?" He flicked a piece of food into his mouth, chewing slowly.
"You seem rather close with my mother so whats it matter if we get along?" I couldn't help myself as I slipped a piece of bacon into my mouth.
"I have a question for you. Why don't you understand we will be married one day? Stop fighting it." His tone turned dark as his smile was anything but friendly. Dark blue eyes stared into mine, daring me to protest. I swallowed slowly. "Are you afraid, snowflake?"
My blood turned cold at his pet name he gave me. I was angry. I was afraid. He figured I was just his, like he owned me.
His smile widened almost resembling the cheshire cat as he leaned forward. "Do it."
I was ready to lunge across the table for his throat and he knew it.
"Would you like more water?" We both jolted to the voice that stood at the end of the table. It was just a cook dressed in their purple uniforms.
"No. We're fine, thank you," Frosts said. The cook didn't move.
"Any more food? More fruit maybe?" The annoyance forming on Frosts face was enough for me to look over the cook. I didn't recognize him as any of the cooks who usually prepare our dinners. He had black hair that was too long as it brushed his shoulders.
"I said, we're fine," Frosts repeated. The cook turned to me.
"If you need anything, let me know." I gave a polite smile with a nod.
"I will," I said. The cook nodded, then with a long look at Frosts, he returned to the kitchen.
"Our staff won't be that pushy," Frosts said, devouring more of his food.
"My staff will be fantastic," I hissed, wishing to be anywhere but here. I took a long sip of the water that I was given.
The world instantly started to spin, the food on the table dancing. I heard my name being called but I was seeing a mix of diamonds and white as I felt the chair beneath me vanish. My head hit something hard as my vision blackened completely. My head was pounding, my eyelids felt heavy as I groaned. I could hear people talking, but I couldn't understand the words they were saying. I tried to talk, but my mouth wouldn't move.
"Her mouth is moving."
"I can't believe he poisoned her."
"We don't know if it was him!"
"She's waking up."
I was welcomed by a bright light. My arm felt too heavy as I shielded my eyes. I felt the warmth and softness that was covering my body. Finally my eyes adjusted as I saw my parents and our doctor hovering over me.
"Solstice? Can you hear me?" I looked over at the old man and nodded. My mother sighed and fell back into my father as they watched the doctor as me questions.
Yes, my head hurt.
The last thing I remember was drinking the water.
No there wasn't anyone else besides the Prince there.
Yes, I felt sluggish.
After I was given a shot and multiple pills to heal me quicker, the doctor insisted I rest. My mother protested, wanting to stay by my side. My father almost had to drag her out.
After a few minutes everything was finally clear and my body was almost back to normal. I still felt a little slow. I sat up in my bed, looking over my blue night gown that replaced the ballgown. When did that happen? I didn't know.
"How are you feeling?" I screamed, looking to the corner of the room where the voice spoke. An amused smile played his lips as he started toward my bed.
"How long were you there?" Mas sat on the white fluff that was pulled beside my bed where someone must of sat while I was out. He ran a hand over his hair since it was too short to run through.
"The whole time." I looked over his tan pants and navy button up shirt. I noticed now that his eyes appeared so clear because they were such a light shade of blue. I raised an eyebrow in question. "No your parents were not aware. They wouldn't let some bodyguard watch." It only took me a minute to realize he used his powers to be unseen.
"Why are you here?" I asked, my voice a little scratchy. Mas offered me a glass of water and the sight of it made me feel dizzy again. He sighed, pushing it into my hand that wouldn't grasp it.
"Solstice, it's safe." I watched him for a minute before taking the glass and taking a sip, then another. Once the whole glass was gone he spoke again. "I poisoned your water."
I wiggled away from him, suddenly feeling unsafe. I swore under my breath for drinking that water. He was going to poison me again and kidnap me. So I did the only thing rational. I went to scream, but he knew what I was going to do as his hand slipped over my mouth as his body joined mine on the bed.
"No. I am not the bad guy," he whispered. I shut my lips as he scanned over my face, but his hand didn't move. "You never recognized that cook before, right?"
Holy hell, it was him. He watched the realization spread across my face before finally taking back his hand.
"You were saving me from Frosts," I said, slowly. Mas nodded, moving so he sat cross legged on the bed next to me. "Why?"
"Because he is the bad guy. It's my job to keep him away."
"So you're first plan was to almost kill me?" I questioned. Mas laughed, it was warm and made my heart skip a beat.
"No. My first plan was to murder him, but that would be messy. My second plan was to sweep you up in my arms and just run until I couldn't run anymore. So almost killing you was the third plan, even though I wouldn't have let you die."
"The second plan seems oddly romantic," I said, ignoring the other plans. Mas grinned again until I found myself smiling with him.
"Are you a hopeless romantic, Princess Solstice?"
"It might be all the drugs in me, but maybe. Let's go ride into the sunset together." His eyes began to glow when I said sunset, making me wonder how many drugs were in my body. "Wait," I said, finally understanding what he said before. "How is it your job to keep him away? My mother clearly wants me to be with Frosts for whatever reason."
"I think it's time you rest." Mas pulled the blanket back up to my chest. I flung it back down, feeling the panic rush through me again.
"Who are you?"
"Mas. I'm your bodyguard. I was hired by the queen to protect you," he said, simply.
It hit me at once like a slap across the face. Frosts was evil, I knew that. My mother wants me to be with Frosts for unknown reasons. Mas was here to protect me against Frosts because he was ordered to do so from his Queen. He watched me work through this, his face unreadable.
"Rest, Solstice."
"But who-"
I fell asleep once more.
