Carla’s P.O.V:
I sat out on the front porch, in my nonno Frank’s old wooden chair. It was pretty cold and raining heavily on this Sunday morning as I was waiting for my brother’s Luke, Jai and Beau to hurry up and get ready so they could take me to my soccer game. I heard chatter as the boys came outside and yell out to my nonna and nonno ‘Were going to take Carla now, bye’ I didn’t hear a reply as Beau accidentally slammed the door too hard. I jumped into the back seat of the car next to Jai and dumped my soccer bag between my feet.
When we arrived at the soccer field, I quickly ran out of the car and over to my team who had already started warming up. ‘You’re late Brooks’ my coach said sternly, he hates when anyone’s late, especially me. I’m always organized on time but I end up waiting for Beau or one of the twins to get ready to take me. It’s hard without a mum and dad to drive me around, but I’m used it. My parents have been dead for almost ten years now; I was only five when they passed away so I don’t remember them much. It’s harder on Beau who was nine and the twins who were seven; they remember a lot more than I do but don’t really talk about it much. None of us do to be quite honest, even though it’s been almost ten years everyone still finds it hard especially my nonna and nonno (my mum’s parents) because they were next of kin. I go visit their grave every so often to clean to plaque and replace the flowers but the atmosphere of the cemetery really brings me down.
Beau, Luke and Jai have always been there for me after mum and dad died, even when I’ve tried to push them away. My brother’s are my life, Luke can be over protective and strict at times but I know in the end he’s only got my best interest at heart. Beau and Jai are the more rebellious brothers who are always getting into trouble and love to stir up everyone else. Overall all three of them are amazing, although sometimes they like to push my buttons.
After the soccer, Beau drove us all to Maccas to grab something to eat. I was starving after playing near a full game. We were going to go to KFC, but after the stunt the boys pulled there I don’t think we can ever go back. Beau, Luke, Jai and their friends James and Daniel are YouTube pranksters who all of a sudden became famous, I have to admit their videos are hilarious but I’m surprised nobody has completely lost it after some of the pranks they’ve done. Luke has always liked making videos and I love watching him edit them, even though he thinks it’s annoying when I look over his shoulder.
As soon as we’d all finished eating, I desperately wanted to go home and have a shower as I was partly covered in mud. My boots were all dirty and I’m pretty sure I smelt really bad. When we arrived home, I ran straight upstairs and into the bathroom to turn the shower on. The warm water on my skin felt good, I could barely feel my toes before because they were so cold. When I got out, I dried myself and my hair and got changed into my tracksuit. I then walked downstairs to see my nonna in the kitchen and my nonno sitting in his recliner.
‘How was soccer this morning?’ My nonna asked as I sat down at the kitchen bench
‘It was good, we won 4-3 and I scored one’ I replied while taking an apple from the fruit bowl
‘That’s good, have you done all your homework?’
‘Yep, all done. I’m just going to go sit in the lounge and watch some T.V’
‘Okay, can you tell Beau he needs to put the bins out?’
‘Yeah, I’ll go tell him now’
I walked towards Beau’s room and slowly opened his door to see him sitting on his bed with the laptop resting on his lap.
‘What?’ he said bluntly
‘You need to put the bins out’
‘Yeah I’ll do it later’ he said, not taking his eyes off the computer screen
‘What are you looking at?’ I asked, walking towards him
‘Nothing’ he said, quickly shutting the laptop closed and giving me a blank look
‘Okay then’
I walked out of his room and closed the door; it was odd for Beau to be secretive. I mean, he’s allowed to have privacy but he was acting really strange. I’m probably reading too much into it, I walked into the lounge room and sat beside my nonno who was fast asleep, snoring as per usual. I flipped the channel from the Italian station to normal ‘free to air’ T.V, I came across High School Musical 3 and decided to watch that.
The next morning, my alarm woke me up at 7am to get ready for school; we all went to Penola except Beau who finished last year. I didn’t mind going, there was a Subway right next to the school and sometimes we would sneak out at lunch time and get something to eat from there. Because Beau doesn’t attend school anymore, Luke, Jai and I are forced to catch the bus to and from everyday. Sometimes nonna will drive us but most of the time when we leave for school, she’s in the kitchen and when we arrive home, she’s still there. She has a massive passion for cooking food and everything she makes us is delicious. In winter, she’ll put our uniforms on top of the heater and our shoes in front of it so when we go and get dressed everything will be nice and warm; I loved how she did that.
It doesn’t take me long in the morning to get ready, unlike most girls I don’t spend hours in front of the mirror worrying about my appearance. I suppose that’s why I’ve never had a boyfriend, not that I cared at this stage; I already have enough boys in my life even if they are my brothers. I tied my hair into a high pony tail and walked downstairs into the lounge room to see Luke and Jai already waiting for me.
‘Finally, what took you so long?’ said Luke, sounding a bit annoyed
‘Nothing, I didn’t take any longer than I normally do?’
‘Come on, or were going to miss the bus’ said Jai, knowing very well that if that conversation continued it would’ve escalated into a verbal fight
Once we arrived at school I separated from the boys and went to find my friends, Tiana and Daniela. I greeted them both with a hug and a warm smile, even though it was forced. Beau, Luke and Jai have been acting weird lately, I’m not sure if I’ve done anything wrong but then again it could be because tomorrow it will be exactly ten years since our parents passed away. Every time I think about it I get sad, I always wonder what my life would’ve been like if they hadn’t died all those years ago.
