chapter two : on the streets

His job was about a mile away from Upta, and he has been working there since he was 18. Literally, it looked like it was in the middle of no where but it wasn't. Zayn has walked down this narrow trail of straight dirt and small minerals for years now. Around him was nothing, but just brown dirt and the shiny stars above him. He didn't have to worry about getting attacked by any animals because they were all extinct.

"Wrist," muffled the border patrol officer in an all black high-tech body suit with a helmet on his head to match. The only thing you could see was his dark brown eye and blue eye that had a thin glass of protection over them, and that indicated that he was a wealthy citizen of Upta. And well to be honest, all of the patrol officers were wealthy and lived as an upperclassmen.

Zayn rolled his sleeve up so he could get it scanned. He was clear and he was allowed to walk through the gates like the rest of his co-workers. If you were born in the country of Arra then you had a gadget implanted in your wrist when you were born. This is how the government identified you in any case or cost, and everybody had this. It was very small and hard to tell if you had it or not. But it was just another aspect when it came to living here.

Zayn threw the hoodie over his head and proceeded to walk through the rundown area. Coppa County was on the edge of the city, next to the border walls. The other workers went their own ways while Zayn went his. It was nearly 10 o'clock at night and man, he was tired. All he wanted to do was get some sleep.

On the way to his small home he saw homeless people were on the street. Along with some kids playing around even though it was really dark outside. Their parents no where in sight and truthfully, some of these kids lived on their own. It saddened Zayn very much. Wasn't like they had a shelter here for them or anything. They just wondered around the county hoping to not starve to death. Despite their situation, it seemed like everything was okay in their innocent eyes and young minds.

"Hey guys, I got something for you," Zayn motioned the group of five kids over. He reached in his jacket and grabbed a handful of candy for them that he got from his job. Whenever he could help he took the opportunity to at least give back to these people. It wasn't much but at least it was something.

"Yay!" One child cheered with a dirty face that got a big candy bar.

Zayn chuckled at their excitement, he always loved kids and he wishes that he could take them all in underneath his wing, "Easy now, make sure you guys share."

"Thank you Z!" Said a girl, a bright smile on her face.

"You're very welcome," Zayn nodded at her.

"C'mon guys, let's go back underneath the bridge! Last one there is a rotten egg!" Declared one as he started running in another direction, soon all the kids followed in hopes of not being last.

Zayn watched how their little bodies disappeared into the darkness. Sighing, he continues his journey home.

"Look what we have here," whistled a man who came walking out the alleys, his tall figure and familiar voice causing chills to run down Zayn's back because he knew exactly who was talking to him.

So Zayn kept his head down and walked a bit faster. Even though he called out for him to stop Zayn kept walking. When Zayn heard footsteps following quickly right behind him soon he was turned around by a grip of his shoulder. And his hood was yanked off his head, revealing his face to the man he was trying to avoid.
