authors note: I'm not sure what to think about this poem as it's the most personal one I've posted, it's actually very nerve racking. As I'm sure you could tell by the title it's about my experience with social anxiety. I wasn't planning on ever publishing it online but I realized that maybe(??) it can shed some light on what it's like for someone with social anxiety. (From my personal experience, it may be different for others). Be kind :/

Whispers surround me
The murmur of life
Laughter, voices in every pitch
Interacting
They blend together
As I retreat further
Further
And further more
The voices quiet and fade
Replaced by the words
The songs
The poems
Resonating in my mind
And suddenly I'm yanked back
The soft thoughts
That I cherish so dearly
Vanish
Leaving doubt, anxiety, uncertainty
To brutally dominate my being
They consume me
And I begin to panic
My mind hurls insults like rocks
Harder
Harder
And harder
I must leave
It's time to go
Retreat
Retreat
Retreat
Escape the situation
I can feel the disappointment
Building higher
I thought I could do this
I thought
I.... thought
Never mind, it's time to go
Silently I slip away
Alone

-until next time my lovely readers, goodbye.
