Identity crisis

Ok so this is one of my favorite pieces that I've done. I kept seeing the effects society inflicted on people and I really wanted to write something on it. It is truly horrifying when you think about what the cultural ideals have lead people to do, what the mental and physical effects have been. And the fact that on some level, no matter how small, it exists in everyone. The voice in your head saying that you're not good enough, that you're not pretty enough, that you're a freak or don't fit in. And most of us don't do anything to combat that. We just try harder and hope that we look like we belong. And if we fail, many of us crumble under the pressure. So I wrote this in hopes of encouraging others to stand up and fight against it. To stand up tall because you are awesome, you are beautiful, and you belong here even if they say you aren't or you don't. To remind people that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we are all unique. Who's to say what beauty is and isn't. Anyways I hope you enjoy the poem, and don't forget to comment:)

Smudging the lines so they're not quite so sharp,
Like razors they cut
To match the perfect, the ideal, the dream,
Losing their beauty, intelligence
Creating a new reality
What happened to their individuality?
From 1 in a million to just another clone,
Do they even realize how far it goes?
It's drilled into their mind, their heart
DO NOT set yourself apart
When will they finally see
Their worth is found in a false reality
So build strength, create hope, inspire belonging,
And pray they'll find the strength to see
The beauty in distinct qualities
And find their peace in their insecurities,
So uniqueness can become more than a part of a endangered species,
And society can pick up the broken pieces,
To restore a shattered world.
