Update; There's been a 1 week timeskip since last chapter. Yep. When I wrote this (about a year ago now) I did not plot the chronology correctly. Apologies for any confusion -L
--------------------
You cannot escape your fate, prodigy. It was forged years ago, and no fatal acts may prevent it.He'd been in this place before. Whenever he was close to death, he would hear the voice. It would always talk of his "fate", and honestly made it sound a lot worse than he was hoping for. He'd told his parents about it, when he was younger, but they'd passed it off as an active imagination.
Take that, Mum.
They will not permit the uprising. Any sign of resistance, and they will take control. You think that you won't die alone. You may yet have some use, but for now - It is time to awaken, prodigy. Awake, for I am your-
Bright light flooded the Astralan's vision. He could barely make out some sort of orange glow, while the sound of bees swarming filled his ears. He groaned softly, moving one arm to cover his eyes as the blur shifted.
Must be Preston.
The shorter prodigy was saying something, repeating that thing in a louder tone before moving away. What Lachlan imagined were trees were somewhere to his right, and there was a cloudy grey sky above. Also, it was still really bright, but at least he could make out basic shapes now.
'-him alone.'
'But he... Lachlan!'
'Doesn't mean you... hurt the kid.'
Uh, new thought, who's this? Kid, kid... Don't remember meeting a kid. Then again, I almost died, so yeah.
'Ugh... Guys?'
'Lachlan!' He heard Rob call, and the blue-tinted figure made it's way into his viewpoint. 'Lachlan, buddy, are you alright?'
'I mean, I think I nearly died. What happened?' Eyesight finally clearing up, the blond moved to push himself up and looked around. Trees, Preston, flowers, some cowering figure in the shade of a tree, weird looking bird in the sky-
Random cowering figure?
Hurt the kid. That's what had happened, he remembered now. That boy had run out of the forest, a few weeks after they'd escaped the castle, and had looked him straight in the eyes. He could remember being turned to stone.
'I, uh, you knocked yourself out on a rock-'
'I remember what happened now.' He looked across to the figure, slowly pushing himself to his feet and walking over. They gripped their arm tightly and looked down, the blond trying to ignore Rob's anxious swearing as he spoke up.
'Hi, we didn't have the best first impressions. I'm Lachlan.'
'...H-How are you alive? And you're, you're not stone anymore.'
'I noticed, mate. Did you mean to do it?' The boy shook his head rapidly, covering his eyes as he spoke. 'No! No, I didn't - I can't control it, I just- I-'
He leant back against the tree and slid down the trunk, wrapping one arm around himself as Lachlan frowned slightly. It sounded like he was just scared, mostly, and didn't know how to control whatever power he had.
'Hey, it's okay. Nobody got seriously hurt, and I'm not dead.'
'But it doesn't make, make any sense.'
'We live in a word l that's full of magic, with people like you and me, and you expect stuff to makes sense? The day something makes sense is the day... Yeah, you get my point.'
'I-I mean, I guess... Oh,right. My name's Vik.'
Lachlan, having an internal celebration that he'd got this guy to talk, sat down a few feet away and ran a hand through his hair thoughtfully. 'When you ran out of the forest - What were you trying to get away from? You seemed panicked.'
'I, uh... I almost turned my friend into a statue.'
'Huh. Not the best Saturday afternoon.'
'Wasn't exactly planned, but yeah.'
Very awkward, such amaze.'So, uh, what-what brings you to the forest?' Blinking at the fact that Vik had been the one to initiate conversation, he smiled warmly and leant back.
'My friends and I were just exploring, really. Rob wanted to find a meadow.'
'There's one over the hills. I-I can shown you, if you want.' Vik offered quietly, one hand still over his eyes, but he'd visibly relaxed. Rob, on the other hand, was still saltily pacing around and throwing his arms up in the air as Preston shook his head.Lachlan shook his head at the two, locking his hands together and nodding. 'That would be great, thanks. Uh, can you see anything like that?'
'No, but if I look at anyone's eyes, they turn to stone. I normally have a bandana, but I kinda lost it. I can kind of sense where I'm going.' He explained, voice slowly starting to get the defensive tone back. Dangit. 'I'm still able to lead.'
'And I appreciate that. Thank you.'
