three; and no fooling around, you two

-----

michael's POV

of course of course of course i had to have a class with a certain blonde who seems to have been brought into the world by God himself. and of course as soon as he sits in a back corner of the classroom the teacher says, "mr. clifford, wait to be seated. there's a seating chart."

and of course i felt blue eyes on me as i stood back up.

and of course the desks were arranged in two's.

soon everyone was gathered at the front of the room, and the teacher began assigning seats.

"iero and way, first row on the right."

"gaskarth and barakat, first row to the left. and no fooling around, you two."

other names were called until only six students remained to be seated, including me and the love of my life.

"back left, clifford and hemmings."

my knees almost buckled under me. luke hemmings fucking luke hemmings was assigned as my seat-mate. this meant we'd constantly work together in class. that meant i would make myself look like an idiot real fast.

i recomposed myself quickly and made a mental note to talk to the teacher about switching seats after class.

it's not that i didn't want to sit next to god himself, but i didn't want to give myself any opportunities to look stupid. what if i didn't understand a math problem and he thought i'm dumb?

i exhaled and slowly made my way to the assigned desk. i threw my backpack under the chair as casually as possible. this was going to be a very quiet year in math class. i'd grown so used to hiding in my room so when i have to actually deal with people, cal and ashton always do the talking and it's like i forgot the entire english language.

luke didn't greet me. he didn't even glance at me as i made my way over and sat down. i sighed lightly, sinking into the chair. maybe if i was lucky it'd open up and swallow me whole. i could feel a slight sting of blood rushing to my cheeks, considering luke hemmings sitting right next to me.

"well, class," the teacher clapped his hands as he walked over to the whiteboard, uncapping a black marker. "since it's only the first day, we'll play a fun game." the entire class groaned in absolute agony at the word 'fun', knowing it would be anything but that.

he explained the game, which had very simple rules. each pair of students was given a mini whiteboard, and the two partners had to work together to write a solution to each problem on their board. each group with the correct answer would earn a point, and the winning team would get extra credit on the first test.

being me, competitive as fuck, i saw this as just any other game. and i was absolutely going to win.
