five; you can suck my ass

michael

finally the bell rang, signaling the end of class and also luke and i's victory. i ended up answering every question by myself, since luke didn't seem to know what was going on. but i didn't care one bit: we still won.

"good job, michael," luke smiled at me, making me nauseous with affection. i bit the inside of my lips and blushed a little, nodding.

slowly i grabbed my backpack and returned the mini whiteboard, since luke hadn't offered to. when i returned to my seat, luke was gone, lost in the sea of students trying to leave.

i sighed, zipped up my jansport and headed for the door. i mean, i hadn't expected him to wait for me or anything-

"mr. clifford, please stay."

i stopped in the doorway, looked back and saw professor morgan sitting at his desk. i mentally punched him in the face, but reluctantly sat down in the chair opposite him.

he adjusted his glasses on the tip of his nose and gave me a once-over. "do you want to explain what happened in class today?"

i stared back at him for a good minute before moving my gaze to the floor. i even began counting the tiles between our desks.

"michael," mr. morgan raised his voice, leaning forward in his chair. "this silent game isn't funny."

i wanted so badly to correct him, to say it wasn't a game. but i couldn't find the words.

he sighed and rested his hands on the desk. "i'm sorry, but if you don't cooperate with me i'll have to put you in detention."

i shrugged my shoulders, still refusing eye contact. "michael, you're sixteen. isn't it time to grow up?" professor morgan said as he took out a detention slip, filling it out before handing it to me. "all right, you can go. but keep in mind that nobody thinks highly of mutes. it's strange and unnatural. i suggest you work on it."

trembling, i stood and tried to ignore the tears i felt coming. i ran out of the classroom as fast as possible, crashing right into a blonde-haired god.

luke chuckled, grabbing my arm so i wouldn't fall over. i took a deep breath because damn it this kid was attractive. and touching me. me, michael clifford. a mute loser.

"um, not to be intrusive but..." he looked around to make sure it was just us in the hallway. probably making sure nobody saw him with me. "i left my calculator in class, you know cause of those fractions, so i came back to get it and i heard you talking- well, morgan talking."

my face felt like the surface of the sun. luke had heard me being a little bitch, fuck. but i was surprised when he kept talking.

"i don't know, it's none of my business or anything but he was a complete dick to you."

i only nodded, speechless.

"come on," luke said, grabbing my hand and dragging me back to the classroom.

"luke," i murmured in protest, just loud enough to make him hear me. my voice was laced with caution.

"shh," he silenced me, still holding my hand.

he stepped right in front of morgan's desk and pulled me behind him, as if protecting me. "mr. morgan?"

he looked up from his computer to see us. "yes, luke? michael?" he frowned when his eyes fell on me.

"well," luke began, clearing his throat. "i just wanted to tell you that you're an insensitive bitch."

i gasped loudly behind him, probably the most noise i've made in weeks. mr. morgan stared in shock.

"i don't think it's right to tell michael to grow up, because he is growing up, correct?" luke raised an eyebrow. "and telling him to 'grow up' just makes it harder for him to do just that."

"mr. hemmings," mr. morgan finally spoke. his voice was as cold as ice. "i do not appreciate that kind of foul language or name-calling."

"excuse me, but..." he looked up for a second, as if debating what to say. "you can suck my ass."

my jaw was basically on the ground as luke took my hand and led me from the classroom. before we had completely left, morgan called after us. "hemmings, apologize immediately or i will send you to the principal!"

"and i will tell the principal about how you ridiculed a student with an actual problem," luke smiled at her fakely, turned his back, and closed the door. luke and i both knew the power he now had over professor morgan.

we walked down half of the corridor when luke released my hand and looked me straight in the face. "it wasn't your fault, you know. he was a serious asshole."

i just shrugged, staring at my feet. luke sighed, stepping forward to raise my chin until we were looking into each other's eyes. "whatever he said, don't let it bring you down. you don't deserve it, man."

'man', I repeated in my mind, melting in front of this knight in blonde hair armor.

"and you can look me in the eye more often, yeah? that green in your eyes has me feelin' some kinda way." he laughed jokingly, elbowing me and giving me a smile before turning on his heels and walking away.

i stood motionless in the middle of the hall until the bell rang, marking the beginning of next class.

my eyes make luke feel some kinda way, i thought to myself. a small smile came to my lips before i bolted to chemistry class. skipping slightly.
