-Primrose(Rose) Rue Mellark-
Some people were born lucky. I thought I was. The war was over and Panem was at peace. District 12 was filled with lovely people. We had a fine president, President Paylor, and me and my brother, Fin, played in the Meadow while my mother nursed my 4-year old baby brother, Hunter. However, I was wrong.
I always knew my family was different. Walking down the refurbished paths of District 12, I could sense people looking at me, as they marched off toward the coal mines, or worked down in the Town as a helicraft technician or a shopkeeper. I never knew why until the 6th grade where we learned about the history of wars in Panem. My brother, who was 3 years younger than me, learned about it last year. My parents were the famous war heroes, Katniss and Peeta Mellark. The Hunger Games were now over or so I thought.
My father held a simple shop down at the Town. A bakery. It was quite lovely, actually. The smell of freshly made loaves of bread greeted me as I walked through the door. Rows and rows of cakes lined the kitchen platters. Each one was like a work of art. They all had their own unique design and layers of filling. Mr. Mellark, my father, taught me how to bake and frost them. Before long, I was mixing coffee, chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla layers. My dad says my cakes are even better than his.
I'm my father's child and the only one out of my other siblings who inherited his deep blue eyes. Fin and Hunter inherited my mom's. Fin was always the experienced one when it came to weapons. He loved his stash of knives when hunting and could deal with a bow just fine. As for me, well the only thing that I can do better than my brother in hunting is setting snares. Fin is a bit clumsy. It took him ages to creep quietly and not scare off the game. Whenever he tried setting a snare, occasionally he would break our supplies or mess up the snare that took so long to make. My brother was well built, caring, and smart. Even though he was only 13, I could tell that he would have no problem getting a girl when he grew up.
Sometimes I felt like I was the least talented sibling. I was brainy, artistic, and could set up a good couple of snares (they're almost like puzzles to me), but I was pretty weak unlike my brother which sort of pissed me off. Why? Probably because he was a) 3 years younger than me and b) It can be very anti-feminist at times because everyone always expects Fin to do everything and be the 'man' of the house. Girls can be strong! Just, no matter how hard I worked, I was never as strong as him. Instead, all I did was paint or bake which was really stereotypical. Fin was also really friendly and seemed to appeal to even the worst of people. I for one didn't trust anybody. Human beings are jerks and instead of sitting around doing nothing we should be fixing our lives.
My father says I'm lucky that I inherited my mother's spitfire and the fact that I wanted to be an activist. He called me a leader which honestly made no sense 'cause I hate people. If anyone was leader it would be Fin. Whenever I would tell my dad this he would just reply, "Appealing to the people doesn't make someone a leader. A sense of fixing them does. The urgency to do something about the situation. Being able to bring and command people together to fix a cause. They have to be cunning. Your brother can be too laid back and he trusts other people's opinions more than his own. Coin wanted me to be the face of the rebellion, but when I was captured by the Capitol, Katniss became the Mockingjay. She was better at bringing people together than me and she detests people!" Then, I would laugh even though I knew he was just trying to make me feel better.
Anyway, back to the story. I entered my father's shop, making the little bell at the top of the door ring. My father looked up. I smiled and waved at him.
"What are you doing here after school?" he asked.
"I was wondering if I could help you. It must be a busy day." His face lit up."Could you please? I have to frost 5 cakes by tomorrow and I can't take it!" I chuckled lightly.
"Of course," I said and I began to frost the cakes.
By the time father and I got home, it was already late.
"We brought some freshly baked French bread," I said.
"Oh that will work wonders with some herbs I gathered earlier!" mom exclaimed. "Rose, you should really come with me and Fin to hunt. Your snares are useful."
"Maybe later," I said shrugging. However my mom wasn't listening. She was just looking at the TV. "Earth to mom?"
"Oh sorry! I was just distracted."
"What happened?" I asked. My mom sighed.
"They want all the war heroes and political figures to go to District 2."
"Why?" My mom paused.
"It's confidential," she said cautiously.
"I thought the capitol gave you a break after Coin?" I asked. My mom shot me a reprimanding glare. I knew about my mom's act years ago on President Coin. It was still shocking. Fin, of course, was too young to know about it. Still, I wasn't allowed to talk about it even to my parents.
"It'll be fine," she assured me. "We all just have to go on a short trip down to District 2 for a while. Your father and I have some business to attend to."
Little did I know that the 'business' my mother was talking about got me and my brother landed in a position that was a living nightmare. But anyway I'm getting off topic.
"Okay. We'll be back before school starts next week, right?"
"I believe so."
Believe, I noted. She doesn't know.
"It's nothing much. It'll be nice to see a few friends..." she trailed off. I just nodded and smiled. Whatever my mom was keeping from me, had to be for everyone's benefit right?
