"Will you share a sundae with me?"

There wasn't much to do on the last day of summer except for going out to the neighbourhood cafe. Folks of all ages filled up the restaurant, but there were predominantly more teenagers around. Emily was one of those teens, persuaded by her friends to go out for ice cream before their schedules would become loaded with extracurricular activity and core subjects. They had all just placed their order when a small boy walked up to the group of girls with a rather peculiar request.

"What?" Emily's best friend, Lin, asked. Emily wasn't paying attention to their exchange as she was seated at the far end of the booth. She was too preoccupied with the alcoholic beverage menu as she silently counted down the months until her eighteenth birthday. Besides, Emily could safely assume that the stranger was trying his chances of picking up Lin.

Despite her permanent stink eye and lack of cosmetics, Lin was a beautiful Chinese-Canadian girl with long, jet black hair, clear skin, and stunning ebony eyes. Specs of violet and plum illuminated in Lin's eyes from the florescent lights above. Emily couldn't have been prouder to share the same heritage as Lin though she wished her eyes could be as captivating as her best friend's.

"Sorry," the boy's voice was sincere instead of timid. "My question is for your friend over there. Not you."

Silence followed, making Emily wonder if the ordeal with the boy was over. When seconds past without the start of a new conversation, Emily lifted her head from the margarita list. To her surprise, everyone stared at her, including a pair of unusual eyes. The right was a warm, milk chocolate colour while the left was a pale crystal blue. Emily had never seen heterochromia in real life. The mutation was breathtaking. She was so taken back by the pair of beautiful eyes that she forgot what was happening around her. "Sorry?"

Lin rolled her eyes, immune to Emily's daydreaming. "The kid wants to know if you'll have a sundae with him."

Emily was even more confused after Lin's clarification. She brought her attention back to the owner of the stunning eyes. Sure enough, he was a boy who couldn't have been older than thirteen. The boy was short; if Emily were standing, he would reach her chin. He was growing out a buzz cut with a low fade. Though his hair was still short, Emily could tell they were naturally curly. His light chestnut complexion suggested mixed blood. His brows and lips were full while his nose was slightly crooked.

But his eyes were the main attraction. They stared straight at Emily, drawing her into their mesmerizing colours. The word was out of Emily's mouth before her mind could fully process what was happening. Instinct took over. "Sure."

Lin was outraged. "Excuse me?"

Zofia and Willow, Emily's two other friends, laughed at the turn of events. Lin wasn't pleased by their reaction either and glared furiously at the Polish and Sudanese girls. One look was all it took for Zofia to sober up and return her attention to her phone. She purposely let her dirty blonde hair fall in front of her face, shielding herself from Lin's hard gaze. But from where Emily sat, she could see Zofia's grey eyes peeking curiously up from her phone to see how the situation with the boy would play out.

Thankfully, Willow stood up from the booth to let Emily out before mayhem could happen. Emily sidestepped around her towering friend. Willow could pursue modelling if she wanted to with her tall, slim figure and breathtaking face. Her cute small nose made her lips appear even more substantial than they already were, and she wore red lipstick to emphasize them. Her short, pixie black hair made her look all the more striking. However, the boy's attention wasn't on Willow. It wasn't on Lin or Zofia either. His eyes only followed Emily, and they lit up when he saw her exit the booth.
