I woke up but Tim was still asleep so I reached for the remote and turned on the TV. I flipped through the channel guide but nothing decent was on so I just turned to ESPN to watch Sportscenter.
I was expecting harmless baseball and basketball stories just to listen to as background noise. Instead I saw my face next to Tim's and the headline read "Tim Tebow married to bulimic nurse"
Just reading the headline makes me want to throw up. I can't even listen to what they are saying about me. It's been nice since Tim signed with ESPN there have been less stories about him because he's not playing football anymore. Which sucks because I know that playing football professionally is the only thing Tim is still pushing to accomplish daily. I see him workout and the way he watches games and I know that playing is something he desperately wants and everyone knows he can play.
There have been random stories about me and Tim like Tebow with mystery girl and stuff like that but we've always been low key and we don't push ourselves into the media spotlight. Even when they crashed our first wedding it wasn't a huge deal because no one knew who I was. But there has never been something like this. Tim needs to see this.
"Babe wake up. You need to see this."
After a few yawns and stretches he is awake "what is it Leah?"
"Just look at the TV."
When he saw the story about us, well mostly me, I saw rage building in his eyes.
"How did they find out? Why do they have to throw around personal information like that? I don't mind the world knowing that you are my wife, they just have no right to label you like that and talk about you that way. I'm going to call my agent to get this sorted out."
"Thanks Tim. Just please try not to kill someone. I know we're going to get this taken care of."
Tim stepped out of our bedroom to talk on the phone. I could still hear him shouting at his agent to fix this. I have never seen him this angry before. It doesn't scare me because I know he is just protecting me. It just makes me sad because I wish he didn't have to feel that way.
I was also worried about another thing. Little Benjamin. What happens when the media finds out about him? Are they going to surround his preschool just to get a picture? Are they going to ruin his childhood? I don't know and I hope none of that happens. He is the most amazing precious little boy that anyone could ask for. He's adjusted extremely well and is a happy little 4 year old. The adoption has since finalized. The day it was final we bought a cake to celebrate and Ben was calling himself baby Tebow. There is nothing in the world better than being a mom and wife.
Tim finally finished on the phone and came back into our room.
"Hey so what's up? What's going on?"
"Ok so somehow they found out your name and dug up every little piece of information they could find. Me being as popular as I am they are just playing and playing the story because people are interested. And of course the media is vicious so that's why they referred to you the way they did. Which is no excuse. The way we need to fix this is by doing an interview. This way the real information is out there and we are comfortable with it."
"Ok that's a good idea. We need to discuss what we are going to talk about though. I'm sure they are going to ask some pretty deep questions."
"Like what?" Tim asked confused.
"I mean do we want to talk about Benjamin yet? I don't mind talking about the eating disorder if it comes up. Also the v word is going to come up I'm sure."
"I understand what you mean. I think it's best we introduce Benjamin now so we don't look like we're hiding him but I will make sure his childhood is not ruined by cameras. And that is very brave of you to talk about your past. What do you mean by v word?"
"I agree about Benjamin, I trust you to protect us. But the v word is virgin. They are going to ask about losing your virginity and I will be tempted to describe how you made sweet love to me. Now I know that would not be appropriate I'm just so pissed off right now. We need to come up with concrete answers so we can end this now."
I don't know how Tim deals with everyone watching his every move and then trash talking him for it. We've never talked about if before so I'm curious.
"Tim I've always wanted to ask you this. How do you deal with being constantly scrutinized by the media? Does it really bother you on the inside beneath the mask of confidence and acting like it doesn't bother you?"
"Honestly it really hurts me. I try my best and give it my all and yet I'm never even close to being good enough. I act like it doesn't bother me because I always preach to never give up and I don't want my fans to think that I give up. That's why I push myself working out and building up all this muscle."
"Wow Tim. You literally are the most selfless humble person on this earth. I am blessed to have you in my life. Never forget I'm here to support you. You don't have to keep it all on the inside."
----------------------------------------------
I have never been so nervous sitting on my own couch. Tim put his hand on my leg to ease the anxiety "we're going to get through this beautiful, don't worry."
"Ok Mr. And Mrs. Tebow let's get started. First question how did you meet?"
"We met at the gym." We both said together.
"Okay. So Leah tell us more about yourself."
"Umm alright. I come from a normal supportive family, nothing out of the ordinary. I did have an eating disorder, as you already know, for a little while but have since recovered. I used to work as a nurse but I don't anymore. I think that's all you want to know."
"That's great. Now Tim everyone wants to know have you lost your virginity?"
Tim and I both laughed out loud. Once he got himself together he responded with a smug smile on his face "yes I did and I love my wife."
I flashed a smile at him for answering the question appropriately.
"So do you two have any children?"
Tim let me take the floor. " yes we do, we adopted a precious little 4 year old named Benjamin."
"Adopted? Can you not have children of your own?"
I really didn't want to have to explain this because it's such a heartbreaking subject but it's better to get it out sooner rather than later.
"No, we lost a baby and ever since I can't conceive. But we have Benjamin now and that all that matters."
"Do you plan on having more children?"
I looked to Tim for him to answer this one. We haven't discussed another child, we're doing great with just Benjamin.
"In the future, yes we'd like more children. Just not right now."
After that it was just harmless football questions asking how Tim was training and if he wanted to get back in the NFL, stuff like that.
After everyone was gone it felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. Now everyone has the real truth. I don't have to hear bogus stories anymore. Let's just pray that they don't twist anything we've said.
