Part 1

Kate sat at her desk playing with her rings on her necklace staring at the picture that sat on her desk of she and Castle.  Esposito and Ryan watched her from across the room, they didn’t know what to do but they were smart enough to give her space.  They both looked at each other before walking over to her desk.

    “Hey” They said both smiling sweetly at her.

    “Hey” Kate said looking up at them. “I don’t want to talk about it guys” She said as Ryan and Esposito sat down.

“Talk about what?  We just wanted to see if you wanted something to eat.” Esposito said Kate smiled.

“I would love some thanks” Kate said.

“Usual?” Ryan asked Kate nodded as the elevator doors opened.  A woman stumbled in and fell to the floor.  Ryan, Beckett and Esposito all jumped up and ran over to help.  A few other officers ran over to help but Kate held them back trying to give the woman some space.  

“She needs an ambulance.”  Esposito said Kate looked down at the woman feeling her heart sink to the pit of her stomach.

At the hospital Kate sat in the waiting room when Lanie walked up holding a file.

“Hey sweetie” Lanie said Kae stood up. “Sit down”

“What?” Kate asked sitting down Lanie sat down next to her.

“Kate, the woman that came into the precinct is your mom.  I had lab run a blood test and it came back as a match to your mothers.” Lanie said laying her hands on top of Kate’s.

“Are you sure?” Kate asked.

“Kate you saw her, she might be in bad shape but she looks just like her.” Lanie said Kate felt nauseous, running over to the trash she threw up her breakfast.  Lanie walked over laying her hand on Kate's back.

"Kate are you alright?" She asked Kate nodded walking to the drinking fountain.

"Just a little overwhelmed is all." Kate said after getting a drink.

"Okay well I know that they are stitching her up and are almost finished." Lanie said Kate only looked at her.

"Lanie is this really happening?"

"It is, this is your chance to get answers." Kate nodded looking at the big double doors.

"I'm going to go talk to the boys." Kate said Lanie squeezed her hand smiling at Kate.

Walking down the hall the boys both looked at her from just outside the room.  

“Hey” Kate said Esposito and Ryan smiled at her kindly.

“Hey, Lanie told us” Ryan said hugging Kate.

“Yeah, do you know anything about what happened?”

“No, the doctor gave her a mild anesthetic so she’s pretty much out of it.  Some of her cuts were really deep.” Esposito said glancing into the room.  Kate followed his eyes to the bed where her mother was laying the doctor had finished and the nurse was putting bandages on her.

“We were going to stay till she woke up.” Ryan said.

“I’ll stay, if she wakes up it should be to someone she knows.” Kate said the boys both looked at her.

“We’re still staying, if she escaped from where she was held we aren’t going to risk them finding her.” Esposito said as the nurse walked out.

“How is she?” Kate asked.

“She’s stable right now and her cuts are cleaned but we’ll need to keep her a few days, just in case of infection.  She should wake up shortly.” The nurse said.

“Can I go in?”

“I’m not sure if it’s a good idea for a cop to be in there.”

“I’m her daughter.” Kate said.

“Oh, go ahead.” The nurse said walking back down the hallway. 

“I’ll let you know when she’s ready to talk.” Kate said pushing open the door to the room.  Walking over to the bed she looked at Johanna, pulling a chair over she sat down.  Reaching out slowly she touched her mothers hand softly. A tear escaped feeling her mother’s skin beneath hers for the first time in 14 years.
