Kate watched the news on mute while her mother continued to sleep hardly paying attention to what it was about.  Her mind was on her mother, what she must have gone through in the last 14 years.  But at that same moment it was also on Castle, like it had been for the past month.  She continued to wonder what had really happened that day.  A body had been found in the car but DNA hadn't come back as Castle's. A moan escaped Johanna's lips and Kate looked over but she was still asleep.  There was a soft knock on the door and Esposito walked in with a coffee.

"Please tell me that is for me" Kate said standing up to get the coffee.

“Of course” He said smiling at her.  She took the coffee and took a long drink.

“Thanks I needed this.” Kate said looking up at Espo.

“I figured, how is she?” He asked Kate looked at her mom.

“She hasn’t woke up yet but she moaned a few seconds ago before you came in.” Kate said with a sigh.

“How are you doing?” He asked.

“I’m fine, just a little overwhelmed is all.  It will become real when she wakes up probably.” KAte replied still looking at Johanna.

“Ryan and I are here for you chica.” Kate smiled letting out a small laugh.

“Thanks Javi, that means a lot to me” Kate smiled he nodded pulling her into a hug.

“Where am I?” A voice said from the hospital bed, Kate looked towards her mom to see her watching them. “Katie?” Johanna said softly.

“Javi can you give us some time?” Kate asked looking at Javie.

“Yeah” He said squeezing her hand softly.  Esposito walked out leaving Kate and Johanna alone. Kate walked over sitting down Johanna reached out slowly to take Kate’s hand.

“Mom, you’re alive.” Kate said with a soft sob.

“I didn’t think I would ever see you again.” Johanna said a tear escaping.

“Neither did I.” Kate said looking at Johanna in utter disbelief.

“You’re so beautiful.” Johanna said reaching up she cupped Kate’s cheek wincing in pain.

“Do you want me to get the nurse?” Kate asked, Johanna nodded closing her eyes. “I’ll be right back”

Johanna let out a sigh glancing at the TV, she couldn’t believe it was 2014 already.  She had missed so much, for all she knew Kate could be married and have children.  Letting out a soft sob she tried to ignore the pain ravaging her body.  Kate came back in followed by a nurse.

“Glad to see your up” The nurse said smiling. “My names Lisa, can you tell me how bad your pain is on a scale of 1-10?”

“It’s a 7.” Johanna said looking at Katie.

“Alright, I’ll get you some pain medicine.  Do you want anything to eat or drink?”

“Water would be fine.” Lisa nodded walking out of the room.  Kate sat down on the edge of the bed taking her mom’s hand.

“You don’t have to be brave just because I’m here” Kate said.

“I’m not Kate I promise.” Johanna said.  

The nurse came back in the room and gave Johanna some pain medicine and a pitcher of water.  

“The medicine will take a few minutes, if you need anything else just push this button.” Lisa explained setting a remote on the bed.

“Thank you”Johanna said Lisa smiled.

“It’s not a problem.” Lisa smiled walking back out.

“Now that we are alone tell me about you, what’s happened?”

“What I don’t get to ask you questions about where you were the past 14 years?”

“I think that’s obvious.” Johanna said “But please, you talk to me and I’ll tell you anything you want to know.”

“Fine, ask away.” Kate said rolling her eyes.

“Alright, did you become a lawyer?”

“No”  Johanna just looked at her and Kate laughed softly.  “I became a cop instead.  I’m a homicide detective with the 12th.”

“You’re a cop?”

“Mhm”

“That man you were in here with when I woke up, are you two together?” Johanna asked Kate laughed.

“No, Esposito is my partner and just a really good friend.” Kate explained.

“Are you with anyone?” Johanna asked Kate sighed shaking her head.

“No” Kate closed her eyes. “I was engaged but…”

“I’m sorry” Johanna said squeezing Kate’s hand.

“So am I, now it’s my turn.  Would you mind talking to my partners.”

“Of course, but can I speak to them privately?  Nothing against you.”

“That’s fine, I might go home and take a shower.” Kate said walking to the door she stuck her head out.  The boys walked in smiling at Johanna kindly.

“Mom these are my partners Esposito and Ryan.  She isn’t a suspect so be nice no bad cop.” Kate said looking from them to her mom.  “I’ll be back in a little bit.  Do you want me to talk to dad?” Johanna looked at her.

“Please”

“Alright.”  Kate said smiling at her before walking out of the room.  Walking down the hallway she leaned against the wall letting out a sob trying to breathe.  She wanted Castle to be there, wanted him to come walking through the door and pick her up telling her that she’ll be okay.  But now she would do it herself the best she could.
