    Kate rolled onto her back her vision blurred as she tried to catch her breath.  Holding her left side she winced.  Looking down she moved her hand to see the red staining her hand.  Visions of her shooting came back to her and she could feel her heart pounding, Ryan’s face appeared above her she reached up holding his arm.

    “Stay down” He said quietly, Kate could hear her mother moving in the bed.

    “I’m hit” Kate mouthed.

    “I got you” He said placing his hand on Kate’s side making her gasp.

    “What’s going on?” Johanna asked

    “Mom just stay in bed” Kate said not realizing how hard it was to breathe till now.

    “We’re staying put till a team can find the shooter.  A doctor’s coming Beckett.”

    “Are you hurt?” Johanna asked, Kate sighed looking up at Ryan.

    “It’s not bad just a graze.” He said glancing over his shoulder.  “Nothing Beckett can’t handle.”  Kate laughed but it hurt.

    “I hate you” She said in pain.

    “I know.” He said with a smile. Closing her eyes she let out a sigh hearing the door open behind her.  

    “Shooter’s gone but a team is still out looking, the doctor’s here.” An officer said, but she didn’t look up to see who it was.

    “What happened?” Jim asked running in the room seeing Kae on the floor.

    “Shooter, but we don’t know who he was trying to hit.” Ryan said standing up so the doctor could help Kate.  Looking down at his hand his stomach dropped.  Kate lay on the floor while the doctor looked at her.  

    “Is Katie okay?” Johanna asked.

    “I’m fine mom” Kate said looking at the doctor.

    “Let’s get her into a room and get her stitched up.” The doctor said as a nurse came in with a wheelchair.

    “I’m fine I don’t….” Kate started sitting up carefully.

    “It’s protocol Kate” A man said behind her she turned to see Josh standing there.

    Kate sat in the bed while Josh stitched her side.

    “You’ve kinda downgraded if your stitching people up.” Kate said he smiled looking at her.    

    “Not doing anything, thought it might be nice to see you.” He said looking up at Kate.

    “Really?  Last time we talked I broke up with you.” Kate said frowning.

    “Things changed, maybe for the better.”  He said. “I got married last summer to my high school sweetheart.”  Kate laughed.

    “Glad to hear, I got engaged to Castle.” Kate said looking at Josh.

    “I heard, but I’m not surprised.”

    “I’m sorry”

    “Don’t be, everyone deserves to be happy… I actually wanted to talk to you about Castle and your mom.”  Kate looked at him.

“What?”

“A few years ago a man came to me with a woman and she was hurt, she didn’t say anything and when I tried to report it the man came up and threatened to kill Sarah so I didn’t.  Kate the woman was your mother, I’m sorry I had no idea who she was.” Kate closed her eyes shaking her head.  

“She’s been here all this time and I had no idea.”

“I know where they kept her.” Josh said Kate looked at him.
