Instead of competing in the dragon race like i was supposed to be one fine morning in Berk, I was busy testing out some new stuff on Toothless. Most of it worked out pretty well, minus me nearly falling to me death. After the dragon race had finished, Astrid came out to see me. We were resting on a small island with some nice green grass overlooking' the ocean. It was nice. But, one thing led to another, and... well, I'll let you find out what happens for yourself.

"Oh gods, Hiccup! You're going to get yourself killed!" Astrid cried out between fits of laughter as Toothless held me over the cliff as I hung on for dear life. I chuckled and smiled at her.

Suddenly, everything seemed to be happening in slow motion. She flipped her blonde braid off her shoulder, trying to catch her breath. Then she walked over to me and gave me her hand. I took it and she hauled me back onto the grass as Toothless waddled off to play with Astrid's Deadly Nadder, Stormfly. I snapped out of my daze.

"Thanks." I said a bit sheepishly, bending to peck her on the cheek.

Astrid turned her head slightly and gave me a full on kiss. Surprised at her sudden burst of affection, I stumbled onto my back. She fell over with me. Her hands held my forearms against the damp grass as she touched her nose to mine and stared into my eyes. I stared back and was again entranced by her bright blue, almost grey, eyes and the way her bangs fell against my forehead as she laid on top of me. Smirking at her, I rolled her over quickly so that I was above her. Astrid rolled her teardrop shaped eyes and lifted her head up to kiss me. It was long and perfect, my making my brain go into overdrive. I became overly aware of the way she smelled like wildflowers, leather, and the ocean breeze. It smelt familar and safe.

Eventually, we broke the kiss and Astrid sat up. After smoothing down her hair, she looked over at me. I was looking out a the ocean with a bleak expression.

"Hey, Hiccup? What's wrong?" She scooted over to sit next to me as I watched the waves.

"Oh, you know. Just my dad. He said that it was time I thought about becoming chief." I replied quietly.

Astrid's eyes lit up. "Hiccup! That's awesome! What did you say? What happened?"

"Nothing other than the usual way he announces things to me. I wake up the sun shining and terrible terrors singing on the rooftops, thinking all is right with the world. I saunter down to breakfast and I get," I being imitating my father's voice as I stand up, "' Son, we need to talk.'"

Astrid interrupts with a voice that she probably got from five years ago when I was a socially awkward 15 year old weakling with no chance of ever completing dragon training, saying, "Not now dad, I have a whole day of goofing off to get started." She shrugs her shoulders repeatedly as she talks and grins up at me smugly.

We laugh a bit as I'm saying, "Wait, wait. Hold on. First of all, I don't sound like that. What is this character?" I smile at my beautiful girlfriends' laugh and continue, "And second, what is that thing you're doing with my shoulders?"

Astrid laughs some more and does it again. I go on, "That's a truly flattering impersonation." as she doubles over on the grass in a fit of laughter again.

I shake my head at her and say, "Anyways, he goes, 'You're the pride of Berk, son.'" I march in a circle around Astrid, who is still uncontrollably laughing, with a Dad-like scowl on my face, "'And I couldn't be prouder,'" I say, reciting this mornings' events.

My girl chimes in again. Weird shoulders, voice, and all. This times she's added odd hand movements. "Awe, thanks Dad! I'm pretty impressed with myself too!" We both laugh again.

"When have I ever done that with my hands!" I exclaim, still chuckling.

"You just did!" Astrid replies, gesturing to my hands. She does her strange imitation of me again.

I sign with a mocking annoyance and gently still her arms while saying, "Now, just hold still! I'm very serious." I scowl again, attempting but failing miserably hide a grin. Astrid makes the same ridiculous frown back at me.

"Dad asked me to be chief, Astrid. I don't know that to say. He had turned around and I got out of there before he could finish." I shook my head in dispair and mild disappointment in myself for being so cowardly.

Astrid smiled at me in sympathy and cupped my cheek in her hand. "Hiccup," she said, "chief is a great honour. You have to say yes! If i were you, I would be pretty excited!" Astrid's eyes lit up again.

"Well..." I paused, unsure of what to say. Somehow, I find the words and courage and continue, "I mean, it's easy for you. You've always known exactly who you are. I don't. I can't be chief while I don't know who I really am. It just feels like some part of me is missing." Defeated, I slumped back into the ground again.

Astrid joins me. "Hey," she began as she braided some of my hair, "What you're looking for isn't out there." She nods her head out to the ocean, rocks, and sun, "It's in here," she finished, placing a hand over my heart, "Someday, you'll find it. I promise." She kisses my cheek lightly.

I smile at her crookedly. She returns my look with a smirk of her own. Gods. I loved it when she did that. It was adorable and wonderful and so full of mystery.

I lurched at her, knocking us to the ground again with me above her. She giggles quiestly, the bright sun sparkling and reflecting in her eyes like a million stars.

I bent to kiss her, and as our lips touch I felt her hands reaching up to the nape of my neck and pulling me down against her body even closer. I was overwelmed once again with the scent of her beauty. Finally, I could take it no longer. I detached myself from my girlfriend and started down into her hopeful eyes.

I said, "Will you... umm," I cleared my throat and felt my cheeks flush, "Will you please stay by my side until I find that missing piece of me?" I averted my eyes and braced myself for her to reject me and leave.

She laughed in delight and flipped us over while wrapping me in a hug that nearly suffocated me.

Eventually, I had to say, "Can't... breath... Astrid!" between gasps for more air.

She immediately loosened her grip on me and looked me in the eye.

"Oh, Hiccup," She said with an affection I've never heard from her before. "I'm not leaving you for anything. You couldn't get ride of me even if you locked me in a box and chucked me off a cliff. I would always come back." Astrid stroke my cheeks and ran her fingers through my hair as she spoke.

I laughed quietly and said, "Good, because I would never do that to you." I caught her hand in mine and kissed it.

She breathed out gently and kissed me again. The kind of kiss that involves her running her hands all through my hair and neck. The kind that lasted too long and left us both breathless by the end of it.

Between gasps of air and more kissing, the words came tumbling out of me without a second thought, "I love you, Astrid." and after more in and exhales and millions of light, butterfly kisses scattered along my jawline, she returned the words, "I love you too, Hiccup." Eventually, we caught our breath and stood up.

I was dazed and my heart ached for her touch again. But, she mounted Stormfly after giving me a quick peck on the cheek and whispering, "I love you," into my ear. Then, I mounted Toothless. Astrid and I shared a looking competition as we took to the sky, and flew home to Berk.

I had Astrid, Toothless, and the safety of knowing that neither of them would leave me for anything else in the entire world. I loved them both and with them by my side, I knew that I could take on anything.
