"Wanted to be a better adversary to the evil I have done."
5 minutes ago, Id have told you that I had seen it all. I've been a Rouge, gone to prison, escaped from prison, been the subject of a all out royal man hunt. You know, I've done stuff that most people haven't.
I thought while hearing the slow click of a black knights boots around the corner... that I was okay dying. I didn't die in that prison cell. I got to go down as the one that got away... that seemed like a righteous end to me.
It was the happiest ending someone like me could have. I was okay with it.
Could you imagine my surprise when my executioner turned out to be my mate?
Of course, you can't tell if someone is your mate until you look into their eyes. So when I saw a man, with dark hair and tan skin... I didn't know that he was my mate... or the Prince. Just a ruthless murderer about to commit another crime.
Until he saw me and our eyes met.
He had the most beautiful eyes in the world. A deep chestnut color with a few specks of gold, framed with long dark eyelashes and thick brows. He was the most beautiful thing that I had ever laid eyes on. I felt the air leave my lungs as I took in his sharp jawline and strong nose.
My mate was a black knight.
I watched as his eyes grew large, then soft as he took in my appearance. His irisis seemed to swirl like a deep pool of chocolate, the gold flecks standing out like burning suns. He was beautiful.
I was in awe... Until he slapped his hand over my mouth.
I was confused as I felt the cool leather of his gloves touch my lips. A slight shiver went down my spine when I heard his cool, confident voice.
"Listen up, Paige." How did he know my name? "There are two soldiers standing at the entrance of this bathroom, prepared to come and kill you in five minutes. If I don't come out." That's when reality slapped me in the face. That's right... He came in here to kill me.
Naturally, I bite the hand that prevented me from snapping.
I clamped my teeth down on this middle finger and his ripped his hand away. He open his mouth to scold me... but I interrupted him.
"So that's what your going to do, huh? Kill your own mate? I haven't done anything! I haven't killed anyone!"
"You stabbed a girls eye out with a fork..." He began in a condescending tone, anger obvious in his eyes.
"Self Defense! She attacked me first! And did I kill her? NO!" I whisper yelled. Still very aware of the guards out front.
"Doesn't mattered, I'm not going to hurt you..." He looked at me with a tenderness in his eyes that set my heart ablaze. "I think I'd die first."
I couldn't breathe. What was this boy doing to me?
"Are you going to call them off?" I asked with a twinge of hope. He wouldn't throw me back in prison... would he? Technically, prison didn't hurt me. Maybe he was intentionally messing with my head.
No...
He wouldnt do that. He's my mate.
"I can't call them off."
Shit.
Damian POV
She looked beautiful when she was angry. Her midnight sky eyes sparkled with defiance as she stared me down, waiting for an explanation. She was shorter than me, around 6 inches putting her at 5'9.
"I can't call the hunt off because youre the Rouge we're hunting. If I called off the hunt and let you walk out this bathroom freely, knowing that you were the Rogue we were searching for...I could be executed for treason and you would only die a few days later when another party comes and finds you." I explained.
Her eyes almost comicly widened. Then set into a fierce glare.
"So you are going to kill me. To save your own hide." She spat. Her voice was better than any song I had ever heard, even she was angry at me.
"No, of course I'm not" Just the mere thought made me want to puke. I let out a heavy sigh. "We just need to make it seem like you escaped from my grasp. After that we'll meet somewhere and talk."
"Yeah right. Let me escape today only to have your groupies murder me tomorrow. I ain't falling for it." She began to pace as her distrust shown clear.
Couldn't she tell I was trying to help her? I didn't want her to die just as much as she did.
I looked at the clock on the wall. 2 minutes before Phillip and Joseph charged in here along with any other reinforcements than might have showed up.
"Trust me or don't. Just know that I'm on your side-"
"Why?" She snipped.
"You damn well know why." I snipped back. She nodded and continued to pace. "You need to make a dead sprint pass the guards, and into the crowd. Dont get caught. Ill try to help you as much as I can. There are 9 other soldiers along with 3 security guards, all willing to kill you.
Stay within the crowds. They won't try to shoot at you if you are surrounded by civilians, but never stop running. I will probably be the one hot on your tail... but just know that I won't hurt you. It's all for show. Run for the exits.
After you get out, go to a hotel. Not one nearby. Book a room under the name 'Jane Castiel'. There I will find you and decide what to do next. Okay?"
"No pressure, right?" She muttered.
I grabbed her by the jaw and looked into those onyx eyes. "I will protect you. If it truly comes down to it... my mate comes first."
Her eyes mighty watered with unshed tears. As fast as lightning she had her arms wrapped around me, her head against my chest.
I found a protectiveness inside me in that moment. A protectiveness so feral that it scared me. I would stop at nothing to make sure that the little creature in my arms was safe. No matter the cost.
