When I was young, maybe in middle school, I was very good at math and science.  By sixth grade, I was taking college classes.  Of course, this made me a very lonely child.  No college student is going to want to talk to someone my age. My robotics engineering professor, Professor Idabashi, was the best teacher I had ever had.  I easily did the best in the class.

"Y/N, stay after class." He stayed

At my young age, I was worried I had gotten into trouble.  Instead, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime.

"Y/N, I'm working on a project. I want to create a robot like no other. I want it to be as close to a human as possible.  Since you are one of my star pupils, I wanted to ask if you would help me."

"Of course!" I said, overwhelmed with joy.

I had found out Professor Idabashi was making K1-B0 to be like his son.  I had thought, maybe K1-B0 could be like a friend to me.

When we had finished, K1-B0(we called him Kiibo) was a little bit strange.  He had the mentality of a child, but he was the size of a high schooler.  His known emotions were limited.  He knew fear and what we think is happiness. (He was a little scared when he got repairs for the first time.)

Little did I know, Professor Idabashi knew how lonely I was. He programmed Kiibo to be near me at almost all times. He was programmed to be my companion.

One day, Kiibo accidentally hurt Professor Idabashi.  He would live, but he would be in the hospital for the rest of his life.  Kiibo was distraught after he had done this.

"He'll be okay Kiibo." I reassured him.

Kiibo reset that night while I was asleep.  He wouldn't work for years after that.

Years Later

I had worked endlessly on this project. Countless years of late nights, early mornings, and cups of coffee.  I had sacraficed so much for this. I could have gone out and partied or even had a boyfriend, but I put it off. That could wait, this beautiful project couldn't.  I wanted to bring Kiibo to the professor before he passed away.  I had grown so attached that I kept my project in my room. (It saved time so I didn't have to go other places.)

I tried to activate my new project, but nothing happened.  He didn't move. My childhood friend, K1-B0, had failed.  A rush of feelings swept over me. I had wasted so much time. It was all for nothing. I raided my notes, throwing them around my room.  I couldn't do it anymore.

After a while of sitting in a corner and crying, I fell asleep.

Third Person

Kiibo's eyes opened.  He felt a jolt of life flow through him.  He was finally alive again. He saw a  human sleeping in a corner.  Instantly, he knew it was Y/N.  Where was the professor?

"Y/N." Kiibo said.

Y/N's POV

I rubbed my eyes and looked at the source of the noise.  There was Kiibo, working just like he had before he shut down.  I practically threw myself at him. I wrapped my arms around him in a tight embrace.  He's just as warm as I remember.  Kiibo seemed a bit...off.

"It's called a hug Kiibo. You wrap your arms around me too." I said.

He didn't question it and gave me a somewhat uncomfortable hug.

"Y/N, where's the professor?" He asked.

He must not remember the incident.

"Right, I guess I should bring you to him. Come on."

We got in my car and raced to the hospital. I grabbed his arm and dragged him to Professor Idabashi's room that I had visited so many times.

"Professor?" I asked.

I opened the door to see Professor Idabashi absorbed in the pages of a book.  When he noticed my presence, he closed his book.

"Y/N, why are you here so late?" he asked.

"Well, I have a surprise for you."

"It's not an important date, so why?"

"Just look at it."

I pulled Kiibo into the room.

"Kiibo?" the professor said.

Kiibo nodded. The professor pulled him close.

"Kiibo, I'm not going to live for too much longer. I want you to do something for me. It's a simple task. Will you do it?"

"Yes."

"I need you to keep Y/N company. Make sure she stays safe and doesn't become lonely. Just love that kid. (He/she)'s loved you with all (his/her) heart." The professor said.

The heart monitor went flat. The professor had died.
