It's just an ordinary day when I'm finishing my rounds at Ursula's Fish and Chips, and Uma barges in the door.
"Panda!" She says excitedly.
"What?" I say apathetically. She digs in her bag for something and pulls out a small orange stone.
"It's for your treehouse. I found it on the beach." She says smiling.
"Wow. It's really shiny. Thanks Uma!" I say taking the stone and hugging her. She smiles. Uma always smiles. It's my favorite thing about her. She's always going swimming and finding me things to decorate my house with.
"Oh hey, the boys are down at the pier. Wanna go?" She asks.
"Yeah sure. I need to go to Curl Up and Dye first. The orange is showing again." I say fiddling with my hair. My hair is naturally orange like my dad's but I don't like it so I dye it green.
"I'll go with you. I need a touch up, and Dizzy does a great job." Uma says running her fingers through her braids. We leave the restaurant and head to the salon. I throw the rock to open the metal door. Dizzy scurries up to us.
"Uma! Panda!" She hugs us tight. I don't think Dizzy has a bad bone in her body. She just has a habit of not keeping secrets. Her innoncence makes it hard to be mad at her though. She's another kid I don't think belongs on the isle.
"Hey girl. We need to get our hair done." I say. Dizzy looks at us.
"No problem. Sit." She says ushering us into the salon chairs. She gets her supplies and smiles big.
"So what are we doing here?" She asks making gestures with her hand.
"We both need touch ups." Uma says.
"Okay. This will be fun!" Dizzy says picking up two bottles of hair dye. She starts applying the dye to my hair first, then Uma's.
"So, hows it going?" She asks.
"It's going fine. Gil lost a fight to his brothers again." I say.
"He's always losing." Dizzy says placing tin foil on our hair.
"And Harry still hates me." I say apathetically.
"He doesn't hate you." Uma says.
"Then how come he doesn't talk to me?" I say. The truth is, the only person he ever talked to was Gil. He was just as goofy as Gil when he was a kid, but right around the time we turned 9 he stopped speaking to Gil, and now he doesn't speak at all.
"He doesn't talk to anybody." Uma says shrugging.
"Don't move or the dye will stain your clothes!" Dizzy says smacking Uma with a comb. I laugh.
"True. He doesn't. I haven't seen him so much as smile in years." I say.
"And he never parts with that ridiculous hook." Dizzy says.
"Oh Dizzy. Don't make fun of his hook. He treasures that thing." I say.
"Why?" She asks moving me to the sink to wash my hair.
"Nobody knows. He never lets anyone touch it." Uma says.
"That's kind of weird." Dizzy says giggling. She puts me under the blow dryer and washes Uma's hair.
"He's always been like that." I say. Dizzy finishes Uma and after our hair dries we pay her.
"Yay!!" She smiles.
"KEEP IT DOWN!!!!" Yells a woman from upstairs.
"Sorry Granny!!" Dizzy says.
"Guess we better go meet the boys." Uma says.
"Yeah let's go. I'm itching to steal candy from babies." I say. We both laugh. Dizzy waves us out and we head to the pier.
"Hey ladies!" Gil says swinging down from a pole. He smirks. Harry doesn't acknowledge us.
"Hey Gil." I say. I smile slightly. Uma notices.
"Hey Gil why don't you do that thing now." She says gritting her teeth and smiling.
"Oh yeah!! Hey Panda come here to the beach!" He grabs my hand and takes me to the beach. When we get there a couple of black roses sit by the water where the phrase "will you be my girlfriend?" is spelled out in seashells. I blush. Gil smiles.
"Will you?" He asks putting his hand out. Gil and I have gone on a few dates and are the best of friends. And yes, I like him.
"Of course." I say kissing him and hugging him tight. Harry turns away. Gil turns to look at him. He frowns. He turns back to me and kisses me. Uma claps.
"I ship it. Pun intended." She says. I hug her.
"This is the best day ever!" I say. Gil hugs me.
"Who wants to steal candy from babies?" Uma says.
"Let's do it!" I say highfiving her. Gil and Harry follow behind. We spend the rest of the afternoon running around town being the rebellious teenagers we are.
"I'm going home. I'm exhausted and I have to work tomorrow. See you guys." Uma says hugging me and fist bumping Gil. Harry leaves too, but doesn't say anything. Gil looks at him and gets a funny look on his face.
"Gil you've been looking at him like that all day. What's up?" I ask.
"He hasn't spoken to me in 8 years, and I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why." He says.
"You miss him don't you?" I ask.
"Of course. We used to be the best of friends. He used to be so full of life, and so happy. His facial expression hasn't changed since we were kids." Gil says scratching his head.
"He hates me. That's all I know." I say. I put my head on his shoulder.
"He doesn't hate you." Gil says putting his arm around me.
"You and Uma keep saying that." I say.
"Trust me, he doesn't hate you." Gil says.
"Well I guess we should call it a night. I have to work tomorrow too." I say.
"Yeah. Guess so. Goodnight Panda." Gil says.
"Goodnight Gil." I say. He kisses me. I smile and walk back to my treehouse outside of town. I notice Harry standing on the hill near my house. I go out on the balcony and watch him. He sits down and appears to be crying. I feel bad. I decide to go comfort him, even if I'm the last person he wants to see. I walk out to where he's sitting.
"You okay Harry?" I ask. Suddenly he jumps to his feet and spins around, cutting my cheek with his hook.
"Go away!" He yells. I feel the blood on my face.
"I'm just trying to be your friend Harry." I say. I don't move.
"I don't want your friendship! I said leave!" He says still pointing the hook at me. His hand is trembling. He looks at me and I can see tears in his eyes. My eyes well up, mostly from the stinging of the open wound.
"You really do hate me..." I say softly, but his eyes are filled with regret, not hatred.
"I...." He stammers. I run back to my house and lock the door. I walk out to the balcony and stand facing the winds. The cold air hurts my cut. I notice he's still out there, but he's sitting back down, staring at the hook. I can tell he's crying. I go back inside and examine my face. The hook left a deep gash on my cheek near my eye.
"Harry...." I whisper. I go to sleep. I wake up the next morning and head to work.
"Hey Panda!" Uma says smiling.
"Hey Uma." I say yawning. Harry is also working. He looks at me with feigned worry, and goes back to wiping the tables.
"What happened to your face?" Uma asks looking at the cut. Harry freezes, faces me, and turns pale.
"Well actually-" I say but stop as Harry looks at me. His eyes are filled with tears. I pause and look back at Uma.
"I ran into one of the branches in my house last night." I say scratching my head. Harry looks at me confused, then returns to his work. Uma gives me a weird look.
"Ouch." She says. Gil walks in a little while later. He kisses me.
"Hey pretty lady. Whoa what happened?" He says touching the cut lightly.
"I ran into a branch." I say.
"Be more careful babe." He says. The restaurant opens and we work our shifts. By late afternoon everyone is beat.
"Hey Panda, lets go hang out at your place." Uma says.
"Sure. Girl time." I say.
"I'll see you tomorrow." Gil says hugging me. Uma and I sit on the hill where Harry was the night before. Uma is cleaning my cut with a cloth and some salt water.
"Okay, spill it. How did you really get that cut?" She asks.
"Ouch! How did you know I was lying?" I ask as the cut stings. Uma puts a bandage on it.
"I can tell when your lying. You scratch your head every time you lie." She says.
"Okay fine, but please don't tell Gil." I say.
"I won't." Uma says.
"Harry did it..." I say.
"Wait what?" Uma says. She looks surprised.
"Yeah, he was here last night and I came out to see if he was okay and he yelled at me and his hook cut me." I say.
"I wonder what his problem is." Uma says.
"It was an accident." I say. Uma finishes bandaging my cheek.
"There. Now don't mess with it," she says.
"Thanks Uma." I say.
"Well I should get home before my mom causes a tsunami." Uma says. I tell her goodnight and head to bed. The next morning I sleep in. Uma barges in while I'm making breakfast.
"Panda!!" She says.
"What?" I ask.
"Guess what day it is!" She smiles.
"What day?" I ask.
"VK day!!!" She squeals.
"Already? Dang." I say.
"Did you fill your application out?" Uma asks.
"I always do." I say.
"We're gonna get picked this year for sure! Let's go to the square." Uma smiles.
"Right now?" I ask.
"Yes! The vks are gathering." She says.
"Alright lets go." I say smiling and grabbing a muffin. At the square all of the kids are gathered together in a swarm. The familiar purple limo pulls up to the center of the square. Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay hop out and walk up to the balcony in front of everyone.
"Hey fellow vks. For 4 of you, it's your lucky day! We will pick 4 of you to come to Auradon for this school year. We have collected your applications. Now without further ado," Mal says pulling papers out. Uma grabs my hand.
"First up is Drizella's Daughter, my sweet sweet Dizzy!" Evie says. Everyone claps.
"Next we have Gaston's son Gil!" Carlos says. More clapping.
"Next we have Captain Hook's Son Harry!" Jay says.
"Lastly, we have Ursula's daughter Uma!" Mal says. Disappointment creeps onto my face.
"Why would they not pick you?" Uma asks angrily.
"It's okay. You go. You've always wanted to go to Auradon. Besides I bet Gil will decline. He has no interest in Auradon. He wouldn't leave me." I say.
"Thanks Panda. You're a true friend." Uma smiles.
"Thanks. Now I've got to go see Dizzy before she leaves.
"I'll go with you." Uma says. We head up to Curl Up and Dye.
"Dizzy we heard the good news." I say.
"Yeah!! I'm going to Auradon with Evie!" She squeals happily.
"And Uma!" She hugs Uma tight. We laugh. Gil walks in.
"Hey ladies." He says hugging me.
"Hey Gil." I say.
"I thought you might be here." He says kissing me.
"Just hanging out," I say.
"I'll see you tonight okay?" He says. He gets a funny look on his face. The look of guilt.
"Okay." I say. He leaves quickly.
"That's weird." Dizzy says.
"What are you talking about Dizzy?" I ask.
"Well he won't be here tonight." She says looking at her feet.
"Why?" I ask. My blood runs cold.
"Because he's going to Auradon with us." Dizzy says.
"Wait he accepted?" Uma asks.
"Yeah. I saw him talking to Jay and Carlos." Dizzy says.
"So he was just gonna leave without telling me?!" I say. I get angry.
"That's shallow. Even for a villain." Uma says. We talk for a few more hours. Then the time comes. I walk with Uma and Dizzy out to the limo.
"Well I guess this is it for a while." I say to Uma.
"I love you Panda. I'll video chat you every day." She says hugging me tight. I smile.
"You be good okay?" I say to Dizzy.
"Of course." She smiles. Then Gil comes.
"Oh no." He mutters. He tries to go around but I cut him off.
"Seriously?! You were just going to leave and go to Auradon without telling me?" I snap.
"W-Well I was-"
"No Gil. You weren't." I cut him off.
"I was hoping to call you when I got there so we could talk about it." He says.
"After you already left? Wow Gil. You're just like your father. You only care about yourself. I'm so done with you." I say walking away.
"But Panda-" I leave before he finishes. That night I sit on my balcony watching the stars. Suddenly, Harry appears again, sitting on the hill. Why was he still here?
