Treating

And once again, I find myself writing about the boy I'm not a fan of and of a particular girl. I'll be a bit more specific this time and my opinion won't pop up as often.

This time, they'll have names; Darius and Clover (don't ask). Their encounter will be at a very common place once more: a grocery store.

It would be a real miracle if this happened. Anyhow, there is an aisle in the store that is divided by different types of cuisine such as Mediterranean or Chinese. There is a section of shelves filled with Japanese snacks which was the targeted area.

Clover was already speeding down towards the aisle, dragging her mother along as well. Her goal for the day was the pocky. It had unfortunately been days since she had last devoured the treat and had grown to crave it once more.

Her arm already snaked around nearly twelve boxes and she hugged them close to her chest. She didn't even speak but simply turned towards her mother, bouncing a tad in excitement with a vibrant grin.

"Clover, I think you're going to put at least half of those back." She said, still a bit dumbfounded by her craze for the snack.

"Why can't we just get all of it?" Clover responded, her tone hushed for no particular reason.

By sternly speaking her name, Clover put half of the boxes back. Though, she was pretty pleased with her haul.

The time then came to go to check out and be on her way home for another lazy summer day. But, things don't always go as planned so now I present the predicted scene:

Clover finally loosened her bear hug from the treats and dropped them onto the conveyer belt, only to catch sight of (you guessed it) Darius from the corner of her eye.

Her heart might as well have ripped out of her chest, put on a cape and flew off to the heavens as some ditzy super hero during the time she took a hasty step back and nearly spilled over a ship load (exaggeration) of candy onto the floor. Only a couple packs of gum and a slim Jim were harmed in the act so Clover had to pick up the items as quick as possible before she had gained any unwanted attention. But it's not like her mother, the cashier, and the customer in front of her in line had their eyes on her clumsy move. It was disappointing, but Darius didn't even bat an eye.

"Ahem...Clutz..." A raspy voice coughed trying to conceal the insult sloppily.

"Just pleasant..." Clover thought and cursed in her brain. The origin of the insult was from Geoffrey, Darius's brother (don't judge my ability to name characters).

"My God... Just be quiet..." Darius scolded and he could have gotten away with ignoring Clover's presence if he hadn't met her gaze. He was stuck now; he could either stare on and move or break the eye contact and pretend she didn't even exist.

Technically, he chose neither because what he did was hold her gaze, look down at his feet and rub the back of his neck, then look up at Clover with the words, "You okay?" Coming out of his mouth.

She nodded frantically and answered, "Yes...fine..." The snicker from Geoffrey, however, couldn't have made her more annoyed.

"That's...um...good..." He stammered.

Commence awkward silence.

"Clover," Her mother beckoned. She had already finished paying and was leaving the check out.

She inched backwards a couple steps and then twisted around on the balls of her feet and caught up with her mother. Of course, she managed to make a fool out of herself once more. Though, the fact remained that she was now running a fever or she was blushing madly and her face was as red as a tomato.
