Isla
"I hope they close the school, I do not want to go to Literature today." April licked her spoon as she gazed out the icy cafeteria windows.
"One, they would never close the school because we live here and two, you have a reading addiction. Why wouldn't you want to go to Literature?" I questioned.
"Because I've read the book fifty times, and that isn't an exaggeration." She clarified.
"If you had your way we'd all be reading about hot Vampire romance." Charlotte cradled a hot mug between her gloved hands.
"And the problem with that is...?" She asked innocently. "But seriously, you two could learn a lot from books." She reached into her bag, dropping a thick book onto the table between us.
"Frostbite?" I read the title upside down.
"I have two copies." She found another before sliding them over to Charlotte and I. "This'll keep you warm." She gave us a suggestive look.
"This is bigger than the bible." I held the heavy book in my hands. "It's going to take us six years to get to chapter four."
April exhaled. "I believe a thank you is in order."
"Thank you." Charlotte and I said begrudgingly.
"So, any word on Callum?" Charlotte asked.
April studied her immaculate polished nails. "No. But I will when he calls me." April would never chase after a guy; she would wait for him to chase her.
"And how about you Isla? How's your love life?" Charlotte turned to me.
I looked past April to see Riley seated at the staff table. "Fine." I replied simply.
"And yet to do the dirty deed." Sometimes I could swear April could see right into my soul.
"Relationships aren't all about sex." I pointed out.
"Yeah, when you're fifty."
The bell rung for the end of lunch and we all rose from our seats.
"What book are we reading again?" Charlotte asked as we headed to class together.
"Midsummer Night's Dream." April replied.
"Shakespeare?"
"The one and only." April pressed her lips in dread as we filed into the classroom, taking our seats in the same row near the back.
We waited patiently for our teacher. I only realised she had arrived when she closed the door, her straight platinum locks pulled back into a ponytail. I couldn't breathe as I watched her take her place before the desk at the head of the room.
"Good afternoon everyone." She beamed, revealing blinding pearly whites. "My name is Eleanor Taylor, and I will be your new Literature teacher for the remainder of the year."
I turned both ways to meet April and Charlotte's shocked gazes.
"For the next few months we will be studying the text A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare." She proceeded to hand out copies of the text to everyone. "This text will be in your exams at the end of this semester, so I advise you pay close attention." She turned around to scrawl her name on the blackboard, along with our work for the day.
"What the fuck?" April hissed to my right.
"I know." I whispered in return.
The bell couldn't have rung any sooner as I practically ran from the classroom.
