Riley

I fumbled with my car keys in haste, punching the accelerator while I held my phone in my free hand, contacting an old friend.

"Riley! I haven't heard from ye in ages." Artair exclaimed boisterously from the other end of the line.

"Is the portal open?" I spoke sternly, conveying the gravity of the situation.

Artair paused, no doubt checking his charts and the clouds before answering. "Aye, it is."

"Great, I'll be there in twenty minutes." I hung up, tossing my phone on the passenger seat as I sped up, smashing the speed limit down the winding country road. As I turned a corner I began to slow, spotting a broken down car ahead resting across the road, blocking my path. Steam wafted from beneath the hood as I slowed to a stop. I noticed a person inside, their head lying on the steering wheel. I got out despite my haste. If this person needed my help, I was glad to do so. I approached the car, oblivious to the fatality of my mistake and it's catastrophic repercussions.
