I blink at the paper, the kids scratchy handwriting. I check for a name and find a David Stephans. I get up and leave the table to the head nurse.
"Hey Stephanie, is there a David Stephans in a room?" I show her the paper. She scowls at the words.
"I told him we can't do that. C'mon, maybe you'll get him to listen." I frown but follow her down a series of halls. She gestures to a door and I read the numbers.
"129, okay, thank you." I smile at her and head inside. I frown at the bare room, and how the kid is pretty much chained to the bed. I walk up and he stirs, watching me.
"Hey David, I'm miss Marcie-"
"Please don't." I frown and tilt my head.
"Don't what sweetie?"
"Don't lie to me." His dull green eyes bore into mine. I smile softly and sit on the corner of his bed.
"I won't lie to you. I came to ask about your wish." He frowns, confused. I pull the paper out and show him, noticing how his eyebrows relax and his posture tense.
"What hero were you talking about? You weren't very clear in your wish." He blushes, embarrassed. "Uhm.." He looks away, and I follow his gaze to his nightstand. I look back at him.
"Do you have a photo?" He gestures with his head to the nightstand. I get up and search the drawer, finding a newspaper article with the photo. I smile softly and look up at him.
"May I take a photo of this?" After he nods, I take my phone out and snap a picture. I set it back in the drawer then stand up, smiling at him.
"will you bring him?" He perks up, hope brightening his eyes. I melt a lil and nod.
"I will try. Can I get a hug?" He shakes his head, and I nod. "Okay," I shrug and head for the door. I smile back at him, hoping for at least a smile. He looks at me and gives me a half smile. I smile wider and nod at him before leaving. Stephanie stands outside and raises her eyebrows expectantly.
"So?" I frown, confused.
"So, what?"
"Did you bring him back to reality? We can't bring heroes here! Their busy!" I sigh and start walking away. Her shoes slap angrily behind me.
"I told him I'd try. He needs hope, or he'll get depressed and will be harder to work with. Do you want that?"
"Don't you scold me! I'm not a child! You go back and tell him right now that there is no hero coming to save him. Do it, or I will." I turn and face her, having heard enough.
"Listen here ma'am. I've got through college for the kids and I've devoted my life to these kids. And so help me you go pushing them down the wrong route I will Have you fired. Our job is to save these kids and get them on their own feet. My job is to be their role model and mother so that they won't commit suicide once they join the world. I will report you for not doing your job right, Stephanie. Don't push me." I glare at her, seeing her face flushed. I step away, having gotten lost in the rant and walked her into the wall, and walk down the hall to the "make a wish!" Table.
