He frowns. "What do you mean by that?"
I swallow, my throat scratchy dry. I clear my throat and look down, building my confidence.
"Sir, my name is Marcie Adams and I work at the local child's hospital. My job is to mother the kids and give them a reason to live, to grant their wishes from make a wish foundation. A child, jack Stephens, wished to meet Robin." I look up to see him rubbing his upper lip and watching me. I take a breath and widen my shoulders, lifting my chin.
"I came to talk about using the bat signal so I could talk to Batman and Robin. That's all. I won't accept no for an answer sir-"
" oh obviously," he scoffs and stands." You've made that clear jumping over the desk and bursting in here. And you've explained it. Now, here's my question. Why should I?" He gets close to my face then leans against his desk, facing me. I scowl. What kind of question is that?
"Uh what? 'Why should I.' Sir, do you have morals. Do you believe in the goodness in people? Or has this harsh job of yours beaten that out of your heart. You see, a kid is this worlds future. And one kid could affect so so much! My fucking job is to make sure they don't fuck us all over! Or kill themselves before they can make a change. I mother these kids!" I back away from him and hold a hand up, taking a deep breath and regain my reasoning.
"This wish could mean the difference between jack Stephens being a hero or a villain or dead. The least and most that could go wrong is I get declined from the heroes themselves to meet their fans. So it's either you let me talk to them, or I take care of it myself." I stare him in the eye, our noses just barely brushing.
He stares me in the eye, no doubt reading me. After a minute, he smirks. I lean back and he nods, still smirking at me.
"Okay ma'am. Here, you can press the button yourself." He gets up and walks around his desk, opening a drawer. I walk the other side and watch as he uses his thumbprint then blood to open the hatch to a button. He steps away and gestures for me to go ahead. I watch him for a second then stare at the button. I can push it, and signal the dark hero that protects this city. I glance at him again then look at it again. I take a breath and then push it.
He smiles and then walks to his window, pushing the curtain out the way so I could see the light on the clouds. I stare at it. I did it. I pushed the button.
"Now go to the roof and wait for him. I'll be there soon." I blink and look at him. He watches me, then gestures for the door. I walk to the door and head for the stairs to the roof. I really did it. I signaled for the bat. Damn, I should've brought jack with me. He deserves to do it too. I stand there by the light, taking measures breathes. He comes up behind me and chuckles. I snap out of my daze and blink at him.
"What are you giggling at." I scowl.
He opens his mouth to answer, but a thud sounds. I jump and look up to see Batman staring at us, standing tall and broodling. A lighter thud sounds behind him, but Batman looks to the man beside me.
"Why did you press the button."
"Don't ask me. Ask her." He sneers and gestures to me. Batman looks to me, his cold gaze heavy and making me freeze.
"Well?"
"Uh.."
I hear the man attempt to stifle laughter with a cough. I glance at him, and see his taunting gaze on me, mocking me. I look at Batman and swallow.
"Uhm Batman sir I uh.." I take a breath and center my thoughts." I pressed the button sir to ask you guys a relatively small favor compared to what you two do for Gotham. I am Marcie and I work for the kids hospital here and more specifically I mother the kids. I take care of them, make sure that they feel loved and cared for. That they don't become villains once they get out of the hospital or worse, kill themselves. One kid, jack Stephens, he Uhm.. he wished to meet Robin." I look over to see the younger one looking around Batman. He blinks and looks up to Batman who turns to look at him. I smile at the seemingly father-son moment.
"What do you say, Robin? Want to give a kid a reason to smile?"
