Chapter 12: The Rat and The Bear

A Few Months Later

Word Count: 1505

I'm running toward Tomoe with wide eyes and a toothy grin, my arms outstretched, ready to tackle my best friend to the ground for leaving me for so long. His back is turned to me, and I shout his name, willing him to turn around.

I stop in my tracks when he doesn't turn around, and I say his name questioningly as I touch his shoulder. He turns to me, a sinister smile on his lips. I back away, suddenly terrified of the only man I've ever loved.

"You never learn, do you?" A dark laugh passes his lips and I take another step back.

This isn't Tomoe, this isn't him.

"What are you saying?" I ask, panic twisting in my heart. Tomoe lunges at me, pinning my neck to a wall that wasn't there two seconds ago. His nails dig into my skin, and the blood thirsty look in his eyes makes tears prick the corners of my eyes.

"(Y/n), you never learn." He clicks his tongue as his palm presses further into my neck, cutting the air to my lungs. "How many people have to betray you before you realize?" He laughs, letting me drop to the ground as he disappears. I'm surrounded by darkness, and as I gasp for air, I'm filled with dread.

"You're wrong!" I scream. "You're wrong, you're wrong!" The words burn my throat as tears fall down my cheeks.

"Am I though?" He laughs, and as he emerges from the darkness, two figures follow him. Mikage on his right, and Yuzu, my older brother, on his left.

I wake, a sheen of sweat on my forehead, shaking hands running through my knotted hair.

I need to find him, now.

He told me I would know where to find him, but honestly I have no clue where to start looking. My best guess would be that he's been buried somewhere in the red light district drinking away his memories, but beyond that, I don't have a clue.

My mind shoots to the only person who might be willing to help me find him and I grab a bag from the corner of the room and start shoving my possessions into it, packing anything I think I might need in an extended trip to the world over yonder.

I have to find him.

I leave my room and my gaze is only focused on the front door when the shrine spirits appear at my feet, holding onto my kimono as I drag them across the floor with ease.

"(Y/n)-dono, where are you going?" Kotesu asks. I shake them off.

"To find Tomoe." I say, opening the front entrance to the shrine.

"What about Nanami-sama?" Onikiri asks shyly. I feel the slight pull back to the land god, but I shake off the feeling, knowing that my pull to find Tomoe is so much stronger.

"She'll be fine," I say, my back turned to them. "I'll be in the world over yonder if something happens."

I leave the shrine without another word, and slip into the darkness, walking to where I know Hirotaka lives.
