Chapter 6: The Birthday
11 years later
Word Count: 2001
I've discovered a few things about Tomoe in the past ten years.
One: Tomoe is stubborn, and will never tell me how he truly feels about anything.
Two: Tomoe watches me practice, even if I don't know he's there, even if he denies it.
Three: Tomoe cares about Mikage more than he cares about his own life.
Four: He doesn't hate me as much as he pretends he does.
Five: Tomoe has a thing for raccoon women, not that I care.
Six: Tomoe has more friends than I do outside the shrine, because I have none.
Seven: Tomoe's birthday is today.
Getting his present was the first time in nearly thirty years that I had left the shrine by myself, and was my first time venturing into the world over yonder without Mikage.
It was an interesting venture to say the least.
"Mikage are you sure I'll be okay?" I tighten my brother's katana to my waist and make sure the daggers by my thigh are well concealed and easily accessible.
"You will be fine (y/n)." Mikage chuckles, coming behind me to tighten the fabric of my kimono where it has come loose. His hands are gentle and he smooths down my hair as he looks at my reflection in the mirror.
"Look at my (y/n) all grown up and beautiful! You are getting so old, turning 40 in a few years aren't you?" He gushes over me, slapping his hands to his blushed cheeks.
"You really are a mother, Mikage." I mutter, smiling to myself as pull my hair out from the kimono. letting the strait tresses fall evenly on my back, trailing down to my waist.
"Your hair has gotten quite long since we found you, hasn't it." I nod to Mikage's words. staring at my image in the mirror.
My new reflection took some time getting used to, I was far more beautiful with my new yokai body than I ever was as a human. It had taken me quite some time to accept that it was in fact myself that was staring back at me.
"I like it." I say simply.
"I do as well, it suits you." Mikage responds. I smile. "You ready head out into the world over yonder?" I nod slowly in response to Mikage's question.
---
Stepping into the darkness as Mikage waved me goodbye was not as nearly as frightening as I had thought it might be. Yokai that had seen me with Tomoe or Mikage stayed away, not so much afraid of me as afraid of what my household would do to them if they as so much laid a finger on me.
Another thing that I've learned about Tomoe was that he was extremely protective, even of me.
He might have a hissy fit if he knew I was down here alone looking for his birthday present.
Stupid Fox
I laughed to myself, then I slammed into a hard body.
"Watch where you're going." The gruff voice above me murmured. The low level yokai shoved me, and I stumbled backwards.
