Chapter 1
11 years later
The bell rang signaling the end of school. “Finally.” Maya muttered under her breath. She collected her stuff and stuffed them into her bag. She ran out of the room and banged straight into someone hard rock chest.
She was just about to curse but when she saw who it was, she felt as if her heart stopped beating. It was the hottest guy in school .Jerome Davis, with his spiky brown hair and his clear blue eyes. Maya felt her insides melting.
She quickly turned away and said sorry in her usual arrogant way. She heard him mutter “Whatever.” She smacked herself mentally for being so stupid. She walked back to her Ferrari that her parents got for her for her 15th birthday.
She got in and threw her bag onto the passenger seat. She turned on the engine and drove home. She unlocked her door to her room and dropped her bag on the floor. Her parents were away on a business trip in Hawaii. “Pfft. Aren’t they always” She thought to herself.
She turned to the mirror and stared at her reflection. She was wearing a camo tank top and normal cargo pants. She let her hair down today. It fell down in waves around her shoulders. She didn’t put on any make-up because she didn’t think she needed any.
She lay down on her bed and took out the storybook she was halfway reading, Inkspell. She read a few words and closed the book. She thought about Jerome and imagined how it would feel to be with him. Suddenly her phone made a lttle chiming sound. She groaned and flipped her phone open. 1 new message.
Then she saw sent it. It was her really close guy friend. Ryan Goodwill. She opened the message and replied.
Ryan: Maya, I need your help.
Maya: What?
Ryan: I like a girl. I mean really in love with her
Maya: So?
Ryan: But I can’t talk to her.
Maya: Walk up to her, open your mouth and make words come out of that hole. There you’re speaking
Ryan: Come on you know that’s not what I mean. L
Maya: Just go talk to her. Bye, I really busy right now.
Maya turned off her phone and sighed. “Yea, busy think about Jerome” and covered her face with her pillow. “Life sucks!” She shouted. Just at that moment her stomach growled. She looked down and told herself “Seriously wrong timing stomach.” she groaned.
She dragged herself of the bed and walked down the stairs straight into the kitchen. She opened the fridge and checked the contents. Nope nothing there she told herself. She went to the snack cupboard and opened it. There were a few bags of chips and a few small packets of sweets. She flipped open her phone and dialed her best friend, Sophia’s number.
“Maya! What’s up! I missed you” Sophia said in her usual chirpy voice. Sophia and Maya were friends since kindergarten. They were also known as the female jokers of the school with their other two guy friends known as the male jokers of the school, Ryan Goodwill and Jeremy James.
“Wassup Barbie! Why didn’t you come to school today? By the way, you only saw me yesterday.” Maya answered. Sophia always made her feel better. Only Maya was allowed to call her Barbie. Anyone else who called her that earned a slap in the face. Barbie was Sophia’s nickname since the day Maya had put so much make-up on her that she looked worse than a Barbie doll.
“Nah, I was too lazy. But still, can’t a girl miss her best friend? Anyway, why did you call?” Sophia said
“Just wanted to ask if you wanted to come over and maybe watch a movie with me.”
“Of course! You’re parents aren’t at home? Right never mind stupid question of course they aren’t. Sure! Want me to bring over anything?”
“Bring over a few bags of chips and few bottles of Coke. Thanks”.
“You’re welcome” said Sophia
Maya turned off her phone and went into the TV room to set up the TV. She put the bags of chips on the table. Just after she put down the bowl, her door bell rang. She ran to the door and wrenched it open. Both the girls squealed and hugged each other so hard that both fell at the foot of the door laughing.
