BURSTING THROUGH THE HOSPITAL doors, the paramedics rushed Will Byers to the emergency room — his screams echoing throughout the hallways. Jogging along with them, Mike and Cassie watched as their friend endured indescribable pain.
"God!" Mrs. Byers cried as she held onto Will. "Hold on, sweetie! I'm here!"
As the group entered the room, Cassie stopped at the doorway as she watched the team place Will onto a hospital bed. With the monitors frantically beeping, Will screaming, and the paramedics barking orders, the chaos in the room was beyond words.
"Heart rate 220," the doctor spoke, reading from a monitor. "Temperature's 106."
"Will?" A woman asked, hovering over the boy. "Where does it hurt?"
Will groaned, squirming in place, "All over!"
As the doctors searched the boy for burns, they discovered that there was none. Turning back to the boy, the woman asked, "Where does it hurt the most, Will?"
"Everywhere!" Will cried, his chest launching up in pain. "Everywhere!"
"Oh my god," Cassie spoke, breathing heavily as she watched her friend scream in agony.
Once again, Cassie's emotions had twisted her insides tight. Her heart boomed in her chest as her mouth went dry. She could tell from beside her, Mike felt the same thing.
"Beep beep beeeeeeep," the monitors voice rang through their heads.
The woman injected Will with a serum, but the group barely noticed. Then, suddenly, Will's face fell, and everything stopped.

Cassie Harrington hadn't realized she was asleep until she was awoken by a voice, "Hey, Cass, wake up."
Blinking a few times, Cassie noticed the bright light and covered her hands over her eyes. Searching the unfamiliar room, Cassie spoke, "Where am I?"
"Hawkins Lab," Mike spoke, causing Cassie's eyes to widen as she stood. "Will just woke up."
"Hey, Will, look who's up," Mrs. Byers spoke as Cassie walked into the room shyly.
As Cassie flashed Will a soft smile, his expressions replied nothing in return. Furrowing her eyebrows, she wondered if he had recognized her.
