chapter four - Barry, theatre and Mrs. Z's wrath
Nothing is going my way today. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero.
I woke up late and had to walk all the way to school in the rain. So when I got here I was soaking wet and freezing. Then Coach Marcia screamed at me for missing cheerleading practice. Next I walked into an empty hallway where Ryan and Chris thought it would be appropriate to make out in. And finally, the highlight of my day, really, some kid spilled his Arizona all over my white blouse.
So I'm walking around school with damp hair, a stained shirt and a bitter mood. This doesn't work well with my plan to get rid of my ice queen reputation.
"Mar.." Jesse said hesitantly from my right.
"What?" I snapped. I didn't want to deal with anyone today.
"I was just going to ask if you were okay" Jesse frowned.
"I'm sorry Jess. I just want today to be over" I sighed and rubbed my face.
"Um- Mariah?" Kris said from my left.
"What?" I looked her away and I saw her trying to keep her laughter in. "What's funny?"
"Your.. um your mascara" She snickered and I groaned, running towards my locker.

"Oh come on" I hit my locker, making the sophomore girl, who's locker is next to mine, flinch.
I grabbed some wipes from my locker and started cleaning my make up off. So much for looking pretty.
"Hello beautiful" The irritating voice of Barry Monete said from behind me. Ugh can't he just take a hint? I've been denying his advances since 8th grade.
"Go away Barry" I groaned. I don't want to deal with him today.
One awkward date in 8th grade and he's obsessed with me. I didn't even like him!
"Come on Mariah! Talk to me" Barry leaned on the locker next to me with a shit-eating grin. I could see Kris snickering from her locker across the hall with Jesse.
Barry Monete was the grimiest guy in Viewpoint. He was attractive, for sure but he had no respect for women. His 'locker-room' talk leaked out of the locker-room and into almost every conversation he has. I wouldn't be surprised if he talked this way to his own mother.
"Why would I talk to a pervert like you?" I raised my plucked eyebrows his way and turned back towards my locker.
"Because I know that you've been trying to get into the locker-room all day to change your clothes and Mrs. Ruggerio keeps denying you" Barry leaned a little closer and I cringed. I can smell his breath from here and I can tell you that he did not brush his teeth today.
"And?" I questioned curiously. Before I could tell where this was going, a familiar voice spoke up that made my stomach churn.
"Leave her alone, Barry"
Mine, Barry's and my two friends across that hall's eyes snapped towards my ex boyfriend and his girlfriend.
Ryan's locker was a few lockers down from Kris', right next to Mr. Bernard's classroom. Chris was leaning against the edge of the locker while Ryan was rummaging through her locker. I could see Ryan whisper something to Chris but he just shook his head. They both were staring at me and Barry. Chris' golden brown eyes stared right into mine and I couldn't help but think about all the times he stared at me when I was his girlfriend.
