chapter ten – rainy days, new friends and second jobs
The rain pelted my skin as the girls and I sat on the race track watching the football game play out. Most of the girls ran to hide under the awning with a bunch of other families here to watch after I made the call to stop cheering. Usually I would have pushed through but most of our routine tonight put a lot of us girls up in the air and the wind was too heavy for that.
Safety first.
"Let's go!" Kris screamed from next to me while one of the football players made a touchdown.
I giggled at her disheveled appearance. Her make up was starting to smear and her black ponytail was drenched. I probably didn't look any better. I could feel my blonde hair stick against my face from how wet it was and earlier I rubbed my eyes and smudged my eyeliner.
"Mariah!" I heard my name called. I turned back to see a girl I had started talking to in Algebra. Her name was Michelle and she was with her boyfriend, Kyle.
"Hey, Michelle" I stood up and walked towards the gate. "Hey, Kyle"
"Here!" Michelle handed me her umbrella and I smiled. "I brought mine but Kyle had one too"
"Thanks" I happily took the umbrella and opened it. "I'll find you after to give it back."
"No! Just give it to me at Kyle's party" Michelle waved her hand in protest and I couldn't help but feel a flutter in my stomach. I haven't been invited to a party in a while and I know she didn't exactly invite me, it was a step forward.
"I actually have plans after the game!" I smiled sadly.
"I parked near Kris" Kyle spoke up for the first time. His brown hair completely dry from his preparedness. I should have brought my own umbrella. "Just leave it on the hood"
"Alright!" I agreed. "Thanks again!" I called out as they left.
"Look at you, making friends" Kris bumped my shoulder as I put the umbrella over us. The other girls seemed to wander back to the awning.
"I think the Ice Queen thing is dying down" I comment.
Ever since the party, more people have been talking to me and inviting me places. Before last week, I would go through out the day only speaking to Kris, Jesse and Tommy. Now it seems like I have someone to talk to in every class.
"Because of lover boy over there" Kris glanced over to where Tommy and Vincent sat.
I rolled my eyes but kept my gaze. Tommy was soaked along with dozens of other onlookers. He had his hair up in a bun and I snorted. He looks like a Starbucks barista. I did take notice of the way his white shirt clung to his body and my earlier suspicions were correct. He definitely had some muscles under there.
His grey eyes snapped to mine like he could feel my gaze and my stomach fluttered.
"I think someone does" I smirk as my eyes fall on Vincent who was waving wildly at Kris.
"Oh god" Kris grumbles but the blush on her voice contradicts her tone.
"Oh god, indeed" I cringe at the memory of them together at the party.
"He's coming over here, what do I do?" Kris looks at me with panic in her eyes. Oh wow. She really likes him.
"Why are you asking me? You're the queen of men" I rolled my eyes.
"Mar, guys usually don't stick around" Kris grabbed my shoulders. "This one won't leave me alone"
"Do you want him to leave you alone?" I ask honestly.
