"Please, Tom," Alexis begged with tears in her eyes. "If we don't go to formal together, there's a very real chance I'll be going alone."

I threaded my fingers through my hair and resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Leaning against my locker, I said, "So? Go alone then."

Alexis crossed her arms, "I can't! That's social suicide! You asked me ages ago and it's only fair if--"

I stopped listening then, because a mop of messy blond hair caught my eye down the hallway. He was walking alone but still had the friendliest look on his face I had ever seen.

And then he tripped.

I couldn't help but burst out laughing. Alexis, however, did not realize my attention had strayed elsewhere, and let out an indignant cry.

"It's not funny Tom! You know what? Maybe I will go alone, just so I don't have to spend the night with an insufferable loser like you!" She tossed her hair over her shoulder and spun on her heel, causing such a scene that a few people turned to watch her go. Down the hall, Newt climbed to his feet and caught my eye, smiling just slightly.
