"I like you, Tommy," Dean said. His mouth was covered in chocolate syrup and more of his ice-cream had landed on his shirt than in his mouth. From beside him, Newt looked down at him in amusement.
"You're nice to my brother," Dean continued. He was speaking in that light hearted, carefree tone only a child could use. "I like people who are nice to my brother."
"Thanks Dean," Newt laughed, wiping some of the ice-cream off Dean's face.
Dean looked up at me, suddenly concerned. "You're not gonna hurt him like Finn, right?"
Newt froze. His eyes were trained on Dean.
"Newt was really sad after Finn left. I remember," Dean said. He took a big lick of his ice cream cone. "He was really sad and Aunt Gina wouldn't tell me why. I don't like you sad," Dean turned his big eyes to Newt. "And now Finn hurts you more. And he still makes you sad."
It was silent at the table. I was staring at Newt, but he wouldn't look at me.
And then the bell at the door to the ice-cream shop rang, and Finn walked in.
