It seemed like every day of the week resulted in some sort of accident for Newt. On Monday during lab he hit his head during a demonstration for circular motion. On Tuesday someone tied his shoelaces together and he went sprawling across the ground. On Wednesday he showed up to school late, claiming his alarm clock had failed to go off. He looked tired that Wednesday.

On Thursday he again didn't show up for physics, and I assumed that meant maybe his alarm clock really was broken. But by 11:30 that day he still hadn't shown up. Normally I didn't notice those kinds of things, but seeing him in the flashes between classes had become so routine it now felt slightly off without him.

I was sitting in Calculus when a group of girls behind me caught my attention. Their annoying giggles and whispers were usually highly annoying, but that day they were talking about the one person I hadn't meant to miss, but was. I listened closely for a second, then two, and then my heart stopped beating altogether.

"Did you guys hear? Newt Lahey is in the hospital."
