The Phone Call

A million thoughts raced through my head as my cell phone continued to ring. I didn't want to answer it; I was so embarrased about how the other night had ended. The last thing I wanted to do was be reminded of Colby. I didn't know what to think of him. He was always just my best friend. Nothing more. Did he expect me to secretly be in love with him too? I didn't know how to react.

"Are you gonna get that? It's kind of annoying me." Charlie asked as he smirked at me.

I grabbed my phone as I returned the glare to Charlie, sticking my tongue out at him.

I couldn't believe I was actually pressing the answer button on my phone. "Hey!" I tried to sound excited.

"I miss your voice already!" I heard Colby say on the other end of the line.

"I miss you too." I said as I stood up from the kitchen table. Charlie squinted his eyebrows at me curiously. I squinted my eyebrows back in return. I took my plate over to the sink and walked out the kitchen door. Heading up the stairs, I listened to Colby talk endlessly until I reached my bedroom. After shutting the door, I plopped out on my soft bed.

"So, tell me about it." Colby said curiously

"Well, besides the fact that my grandpa is trying to arrange a friendship for me, it's not too terrible."

"Arrange a friendship?"

"See, there's this boy." There was a moment of silence on the phone. Colby seemed concerned.

"A boy? You mean a boy you like?"

I tried to reassure Colby. "No! Of course not. He's a boy I hate. He's my grandpa's handyman and I'm pretty sure the feeling is mutual. Let's just say we got off to a bad start."

"Casey, if I remember correctly, we also got off to a bad start."

"Yes, but that was different. You wouldn't talk to me. This guy talks too much and says everything at the wrong time!"

This phone conversation made me surprisingly miss Colby. Even though I now knew how he felt about me, it wasn't awkward. He was the same Colby that I had always stayed up talking to until midnight.

Colby picked the conversation back up. "Well even if you hate him, that guy is pretty lucky."

I tried my best not to burst out laughing. "What on earth are you talking about?"

"He gets to see you everyday! I would kill for that chance!"

"Chance?" I asked confused

"He has the chance to win you over. I don't." Colby explained sadly.

"Oh." I didn't know how to respond.

"Exactly."

"Look Colby, I'm not giving this guy a chance to win me over. I promise. Don't worry; you're the only boy in my life right now. Hey, grandpa's calling me from downstairs. I'll talk to you later!"

"Bye. I love you." Colby said. But Casey had already hung up before she could even hear him....
