That night after getting home from the bakery, I decided to go back to the dock and watch the stars. I felt such a huge relief that my relationship with Colby was restored. I stood on the very edge of the dock in my sky blue dress, but I was cold without Charlie's jacket. I wrapped my arms around myself, just trying to provide some form of warmth. The still lake was astounding with the reflection of the full moon displayed on it. I suddenly heard the sound of boots walking up to me on the dock; I recognized the footsteps. I turned around to find myself standing face to face with Charlie.
"Is everything okay with Colby?" He asked curiously
"Even better than before..." I responded. I caught myself blushing.
Charlie bit his lip and looked at me. "You know how I said that fighting our feelings may be what's best for us right now?"
I nodded my head as I had a flashback to his saying those words.
He continued. "I can't fight my feelings." He shook his head back and forth.
"Look, I've tried my best to look at you and not feel anything. But, I still feel so much that I can't fight it anymore either."
Charlie placed his hands around my waist and smiled at me. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling myself closer. We began slow dancing with the backdrop of a gorgeous, still lake. Even though there was no music, it was simply sweet. I rested my head on his shoulder as we continued to sway back and forth.
"You know why I love this lake?" He whispered in my ear
"Why?" I whispered back giggling
"Because I kissed you for the very first time here....hoping it wouldn't be the last time I kissed you."
"It doesn't have to be the last time." I reassured him still dancing. I lifted my head off of his shoulder. Our faces were only a few cenimeters apart. We stood there for a few minutes, but Charlie didn't do anything.
I was scared to ask, but I did anyways. "Why don't you want to kiss me?"
He smiled. "Because I don't want this moment to end that quickly..." Well, that was the perfect answer.
Charlie pulled me in for a huge hug, lifting my feet off the ground. He spun me around, then he lowered me back to the ground. I couldn't help giggling. As I looked down, Charlie kissed my forehead and then pulled away. He flashed me that smile that I was in love with and shared it with me. As his lips were pressed upon mine, I felt butterflies rush through my body. I pulled away trying to catch a breath, but he pulled me back kissing me more passionately. I barely had time to breathe, but that's what love is right? Not being able to breathe around someone.
That summer I experienced alot. I learned that a best friend's happiness is more valuable than your own. Also, I was able to find comfort after losing a man whom I had always relied on. I realized that sometimes you can fall in love with the least expected person. Finally, when you're searching for something, you have to go back to where it all began.
