My grandfather, Andy, Charlie and I all sat around the kitchen table for breakfast. "What time did you two rascals finally get home last night?" my grandfather asked in his morning voice.
Charlie and I exchanged glances.
Charlie, sitting next to me, spoke up. "I hate to tell you how late we were out. But, let's just say it was a long night." I nodded my head in agreement.
"Ahhh the two little rebels." my annoying brother Andy said as he mocked us
"Andy, don't act like that towards your sister." My grandpa scolded Andy. I winked at my grandpa as I laughed. He was always looking out for me.
I looked over to catch Charlie staring at me. I guess I was trying to steal a stare too. I looked away blushing; butterflies rushed through my stomach. My mother walked into the room to break the silence.
"Honey, someone sent you a letter!"
I stood up from the kitchen table to obtain the letter from my mother. I recognized the address on the envelope; the address belonged to Colby. I tore open the sealed the envelope, anxious to read the contents of the letter. Everyone in the kitchen stared at me, including Charlie, as though they were expecting me to read it aloud.
"No way..." I said as I shook my head. They all looked away awkwardly. I read it silently to myself.
Dear Casey,
I can't even begin to describe how much I miss you. Even though you've only been gone for a little while, it feels like an eternity. I cannot wait until the day I get to see your face again. Everything feels so different now; I'm missing my best friend. I hate that we can only talk on the phone. Please don't forget about me. Also, don't let anyone there change your smile. You're beautiful.
Colby
I looked up from the letter to find everyone staring at me once again. "So? Who's it from?" Charlie asked curiously
"Just a friend!" I responded
But he wasn't just a friend.
