He gently brushed the hair from her face,
To see the sadness in her eyes…
He was leaving her alone on this base,
For her to wonder what horrors she’d realize…
He wiped away a single tear,
That had started down her cheek…
Though he’d only be gone a year,
Leaving her made him weak…
She leaned into him to steal a kiss,
Both of them knowing it could be the last…
The feeling it gave they knew they’d miss,
And the moments they’d shared gone too fast…
Standing there with her in his arms,
He just can’t bear to let her go…
As the tears fall on their broken hearts,
They try not to let it show…
But she fears someday he won’t return,
And she’ll be left in this life alone…
Crossing a bridge she wished would burn,
Not taking him down that dark desert road…
She waits and watches till the plane has gone,
Shedding an endless supply of tears…
Every time she waits this long,
It feels like he’s away for years…
But it’s what he was always meant to do,
A soldier for the freedom of his country…
She only wished it was easier to get through,
When he’s out there being all he can be.
