elsie's pov !
two months had passed since he said goodbye, and not a day had passed where i didn't think about it. it's one thing when someone starts as a friend and then changes, but when that person starts as your idol, it hurts a hell of a lot more. you see, we put celebrities we love on a pedestal, almost like a god. we admire and react to every move they make, every picture they post, every movie they're in, hoping and praying that someday we'd at least get a message from them, and maybe even meet them. these celebrities bring us joy. they lift us up, teach us to love ourselves, and show us how to live our best lives. in some cases, they're the only thing convincing us to keep breathing, the primary reason we're living. they save our lives without even knowing they did that, and we would do anything to find a way to thank them.
that's what timothee was for me. he was my idol, so you can only imagine how it felt to have him interact with me as though we were friends, and as though he loved me. it's ironic when the same person who taught you to love yourself teaches you why you never did in the first place.
two months had passed since i left my house. in the first month, my mother, worried, had driven hours from san francisco to los angeles to check on me, stayed for two days, bought me groceries and gas, and had me promise her i'd take care of myself and get out more. i had broken those promises. the farthest i had gone from my house was to sit in the rocking chairs on my porch, but looking at the driveway reminded me of his quaint little convertible he had picked me up in the night i found what true happiness was. i returned inside, and never so much as opened the front door again.
lydia and annemarie had apologized to me - an apology which i returned, as i had overreacted to them trying to help me. they truly care about me, and i'm eternally grateful for them. today, they invited me out to coffee, begging me until i reluctantly agreed, so today would be the first day i've left my house since it happened. i was excited and terrified - i was praying i didn't run into anyone who would question or remind me of him. i didn't try very hard to look nice, throwing my hair into an unkempt bun and slipping on whatever clothes looked the most comfortable and the least dirty.
lydia's car pulled into the driveway, and i could see marie in the passenger seat as i walked towards it. a small smile creeped on my face, the first in a long time. i opened the car, immediately greeted by screams from both girls and the song "growing pains" by coin practically shaking the entire vehicle. i let out a laugh - a real one - and got in the car. lydia backed out of the driveway and sped down the road.
the car ride was everything i had missed about my friends - music, laughter, love - and it reminded me to never take them for granted. no matter what happened, these girls would always be there for me.
"el? you okay?" lydia said, pulling me from my thoughts.
"haven't been this good in a long time." i smile, both lydia and marie returning it. we parked outside a small coffee shop and went inside, sitting at a bar table and chatting about simple things over the drinks in our hands.
"he looked so good in passengers," annemarie gushed about chris pratt.
"jennifer lawrence looked better," lydia giggled, sipping on her coffee. i laughed, glad to finally be with my best friends again.
"so, elsie," annemarie started, smirking, "did you notice the barista totally checking you out?" confused, i glanced over at the dark haired boy behind the register. he smiled, winking at me in the middle of a transaction. i smiled back, but rolled my eyes as i responded to annemarie. "oh whatever, i'm sure he does that with everybody."
"don't make assumptions!" he half-shouted across the shop. we all giggled, the attention of the customers inside shifting to us for a small moment. lydia nudged me. "talk to him!" he was still looking in our direction, and when i looked back at him and our eyes met, he hit his coworker on his shoulder and gestured at the register before hurrying to our table. the two girls in front of me laid their heads in their hands, smirking as he approached.
