(A/N): Finally! A good chapter! AND it has Peter!
First Day of School
I wonder if anyone will like me? My thoughts overwhelmed me as I pushed open the doors to "Midtown School of Science & Technology".
I walked over to where I was told the office would be and strode up to the main desk. "Excuse me, my name is Camille, and I'm new." The office person smiled and turned to their computer. Their hands danced across the keyboard faster than my eyes could follow before they turned back to me.
"I'm printing your schedule out now, would you like for me to call on a student with shared classes to show you around?" I refused their kind offer, stating that I could find it myself.
~~~
I entered my first class minutes before the bell rang and stood by the teacher. "You must be our new student Camren!" She exclaimed excitedly.
I felt embarrassed as I shyly corrected her. "Actually, m-my name is Camille." Her expression turned more embarrassed than mine, if possible.
"So sorry dear, here, to make up for it I won't make you introduce yourself in front of the classroom. Deal?" I nodded quickly, happy to avoid confrontation. "There's an open spot in front of the boy in the blue sweater."
I luged my backpack over to the middle row and sat down as a loud bell-well, more like a buzzer-sounded.
"Psst." I turned around in my seat to face where the sound came from. The blue sweater wearing boy smiled at me and whispered, "Hi, I'm Peter". I gave a lopsided smile in return and awkwardly took his outstretched hand. Before I had the chance to tell him my name in return, someone else did it for me.
"We have a new student with us today, Camille Riley-Anderson!" Ms. Stinstal's (I think that was her name, I don't know, my short memory can't even remember what she told me it was for sure) voice filled the room. I shrunk in my seat as all eyes turned to me. I stiffly waved before suddenly becoming very interested in my pencil on the desktop.
As attention shifted back to the front of the room I felt hesitant, light, tapping on my shoulder. I surreptitiously readjusted my position in the chair so I could resume whispering to who I hoped was a potential friend. We locked eyes and shared a timid smile. Damn! He's cute! "Hi Peter,"
"Hi there... Camille." His eyes seemed to plead that he heard my name right. I gave a small nod to tell him he got it correct. "What school did you transfer from?"
"One that you've probably never heard of." Even though I was conversing with Peter I had my eyes glued to the board to make it seem like I was paying attention to the lession.
"And why is that?" He sounded intrigued by my suggestion.
"I used to live in Washington. The state that is, not D.C.." My voice caught on the word used.
"Oh." There was a pause and for a moment I thought our conversation was over. "Why'd you decide to move here?"
I didn't want to relive why I came here but I also had no desire to lie to him. "I... My parents died, so I came to move in with my grandfather"(s)? Huh. I never asked if Capsicle & Tony are married.
"Oh." He seemed to not know how to respond to that and I wondered if I shouldn't've mentioned the whole orphan thing. "I know what that's like, my parents died when I was younger. I now live with my Aunt May... But she's cool." Even though his tone turned somber, I felt a little relief knowing that someone else knew kinda how it felt.
We let our conversation end there. The rest of class passed in a haze, as soon as the bell rang, I bolted for the door so I would have time to find my next class in time. It was only when I reached biology that I realized I forgot to say goodbye to Peter.
~~~
When lunch rolled around I found myself standing off to the side, trying to find somewhere unintimidating to sit. Looking around, I found a chick in all black who was reading a book. My type of person! Hopefully she won't mind.
"Hey, can I sit with you?" I tried my best to not sound too desperate. She momentarily looked up from her book to meet my gaze.
"Sure? I guess." She let her book fill her sight once again. I sat down quickly and pulled out the lunch that Steve had made me. I told him I could make my own lunch but he insisted that for my first day he'd pack it.
''Oh my gosh, I love that book!" She seemed surprised by this.
She raised an eyebrow. "I didn't take you for a reader."
"I love books! They are like portals to other world's that you can easily access." We got to talking about our favorite books and soon enough the topic drifted to movies to music to stores to clothing style etc...
I felt a shift in the weight on the bench and looked to the far side of the table to see a kid in a Starwars T-shirt, but what caught my eye was the person with which he was speaking with. On the opposite side of him sat Peter the only person (besides Michelle) who I met today & thought of as a future friendship.
"Hi Peter!" I called over and waved enthusiastically. He jumped and turned towards me shocked.
"Dude, is she talking to you? How'd you get a girl like her to know your name? She's hot!" I laughed at his friends failed attempt at whisper-shouting while saying this.
"Sh-shut up! Oh, hey Camille! I'm surprised you remembered my name! Stupid! Why did I say that?!" These two need to learn how to whisper, I mean Come On! But it was as entertaining as it was embarrassing.
"Of course I did, you were the first, and only, person to talk to me first here." I gave a sad smile and dragged Michelle over to them. "Hi! My name's Camille!" I stuck my had out to Starwars kid.
"N-Ned."
