Miserable from the heartbreaking conversation he'd had earlier that night, Jack had been laying in bed for hours drifting in and out of consciousness.
His stomach felt uneasy and he suddenly felt as though he was going to be sick. He sat bolt upright, and glanced over at the digital clock.
2:14 am.
As quickly as he could manage, Jack scrambled into the bathroom in his wheelchair and threw himself in front of the toilet.
Nothing. Must have been a false alarm.
Just as he heaved himself back into his wheelchair, he heard a distant mixture of sounds resembling panic.
Curious, he rolled out of the bathroom and opened his door. Sneakily, he peered his head out into the hallway and saw a few doctors run past.
"Code blue in room 38b." He overheard from one of their pagers.
Uh-oh, that didn't sound great. Jack turned around to return back to bed when all of a sudden he stopped dead in his tracks.
Room 38b.
That was Elsa's room.
He vigorously span his chair back around and called after one of the doctors.
"Hey!" One of them slowed their pace, and glanced back. "What does code blue mean, again?"
"I don't think I-"
"That's my friend, what does code blue mean?" He demanded again.
"Her heart's stopped. I gotta go kid, we'll do our best."
Do our best? Do our best?! That wasn't good enough for Jack.
He didn't care what the hospital rules were, he sped off down the hallway, following the doctors. He had to see her- now.
He reached her door and was instantly greeted by two nurses blocking his path.
"Son, we're afraid you can't go in there." The male nurse spoke. The other nurse hovered behind him, almost as if she was edging closer to the door to block it off even further.
"Why the hell not?! That's my... She's like my... Look, I love her! Please you gotta let me in!"
"We can't do that, if you want us to save her life you'll have to stay out of the way. We're sorry." The other nurse urged as calmly as she could manage.
"What the hell happened? She was fine earlier!" He cried.
"A problem occurred- with her IV drip, we don't know what happened."
Feeling very distressed and unsure of what to do with himself, Jack ran his hand through his hair and held it there. He'd lost track of his breathing and the nurses started to look worried.
They glanced at each other and the male nurse stepped forward. "What's your name?"
"It's- I'm- my name is J-Jack." He panted.
"Okay Jack," He kneeled down to Jack's level and pointed to his eyes. "Look at me, right here."
Jack scrunched his face up; eyes firmly shut, before blinking and slowly looking up at him.
"Okay that's good Jack. Now, let's breathe together okay?" He held his gaze. "In for 5..."
Jack nodded and started to inhale the clean hospital air, then- as guided, started to exhale. They were breathing like that for a while, as the other nurse watched with a slight anticipation.
