Mortals were never meant to live with their god. But Yuan Ji, their God  had become lonely watching them from his realm.  So he granted them a space in his kingdom, which he named Spirit Snow Mountain.  This space in no way matched the grandeur of the space available to Yuan Ji, but was nonetheless more than enough for the new residents.  The mortals were honored to be with Yuan Ji and he was gracious and giving to them.

But over time their interest waned and they soon returned to their barbaric habits.  As the mortals grew in numbers and generations passed they began to disrespect their God, his benefaction forgotten.  Some even tried to rule themselves. This angered Yuan Ji and so he punished them. But this did not subdue the mortals. They continued to disrespect Yuan Ji and so his punishments became even more severe. Tens of thousands of years had passed. No mortals remembered anymore all that Yuan Ji had done for them, they only knew his hatred and resentment.

In an attempt to better manage the mortals  he took on two of his most loyal subjects. These two had so successfully lead a following of loyal mortals to Yuan Ji, that he granted them long life.  As the years passed, these two had brought so many mortals to give their respect to Yuan Ji that he also granted them powers.  One was granted the power of fire, and one the power of ice.

The one he granted long life and ice spells to was named She Mi.  The one to which he granted long life and fire spells was named Yan Zhu.  She Mi eventually became ruthless in his punishments for going against Yuan Ji's rule and thus garnered more respect from Yuan Ji, but had less followers.   Yan Zhu did not have the stomach for it and held back her punishements for many thousands of years resulting in many more followers for the fire tribe.
