Long before he had brought people to his realm and long before the hidden lotus came into his life, there was just Yuan Ji.  He had many universes, though he chose one spot to live in while he watched life grow in all of the others.  Near his home he had a large ever blooming cherry blossom tree.  Yet no other creatures lived near him.  He was alone.  No life grew near his home other than the majestic tree.  So one day, he took out his great sword and transferred his own life force into each and every cherry blossom.  As the cherry blossoms floated down they transformed into birds who then glided off into the sky, shrieking their joy.

Yuan Ji was made up of raw energy.  To create anything he simply passed on his spiritual energy to create a new life form. This was how he created his birds. Although Yuan Ji could not die, creating his birds required more of his life force than he had anticipated and he was left with too little for himself. He lie under the cherry blossom tree, sword fallen nearby, unable to move. But he had no regrets. These birds were in essence, his children. Later, people would call them Xian Xue birds.

After he created his children, they had all left to the sky forgetting him almost completely, leaving him weakened and alone.  That was how the lotus had found him. She didnt know how long he had been in this weakened state, but it looked to her as though it had been a very long time. She picked him up, brought him to his home and granted her own wish to bring him back to his former self.  But by granting this wish, she could never again be allowed to be in her human form and could only appear every 10,000 years when she bloomed.  She had fallen for Yuan Ji at first sight, but she had granted her own wish out of greed, which was not without punishment. But she also had no regrets for her action. She loved him more than herself and expected nothing in return. He in turn was forever grateful to the lotus and so vowed to protect her for as long as he could. She never did reveal to him her true nature which she could never again attain.
