I'm not the type to leave things messy, so it may be a surprise to others to see my bed in the state it's in. I'm sitting crisscross on top of my sheets that are littered with a bunch of scrolls. All of which I borrowed from Sensei Wu, and all of which centered around the same thing.

I pick up one and unroll it, reading it's contents.

Serpentine Rank System

Generals
They are the leaders of the serpentine tribes. They can be distinguished by having a long tail instead of legs, and carry the tribe's staff. The General ranking is achieved when another serpentine challenges them in combat for the staff. The winner's legs will turn into a tail, and the old General will lose their tail for legs. It is assumed that if a General dies, the most capable for the position will receive a tail.

Warriors
Powerful fighters in the serpentine ranks, but not as numerous as soldiers and scouts. They are second in ranking to Generals. They can be distinguished by their similar characteristics to their tribe General, except have legs instead of tails.

Soldiers
The regular fighters of serpentine forces. They can be distinguished by having less elaborate head markings then Warriors and Generals. They are commonly seen with two large fangs protruding from their mouths. Soldiers can challenge Warriors to reach Warrior rank, and upon winning, will receive their head markings and the loser will lose theirs.

Scouts
They are the lowest ranking members of the serpentine, aside from Vipers. They presumably play a supporting role in combat, collecting information on the enemy, and backing up stronger ranks. They can be distinguished by their more human-like, reptilian heads. A Scout can climb further in rank by challenging a rank above. If they win, they will get a more snake-like head and the loser will have a human-like one.

Vipers
These rank just below scouts and are few in number. They have weaker versions of their tribes power, making them the weakest. They are mostly used as tools, or in some cases, weapons. They are distinguished by the fact they look similar to normal snakes. They cannot challenge other rankings to climb in rank.

It's like a whole class system is built within the tribes. I wonder how the author of this scroll got this information?

I hear Nya yawn from her bed on the opposite side of the room. I roll up the scroll and place it in the already read pile. Stretching to alleviate my back from hunching over scrolls.

Nya sits up on her bed, rubbing her tired eyes, "Mira? How long have you been up?" She says groggily.

"S-Sunrise," I answer. My need to organize kicks in and I start to organize the open scrolls into either already read and keep for later.

I hear the sheets shuffle under her, followed by a thump and footsteps. Nya comes into my peripheral vision, brushing her bedhead back with her hand. "You're still pouring over those old scrolls?"

"I want to... to learn all I can on the s-s-serpentine," I say. I have to know every bit of information I can find on our enemy. We will need this in the future, and I want to help as much as I can.

Nya picks one up, one from the already read pile. It details the various powers each tribe has. It's ripped at the bottom, like a few others are, due to what I assume is old age. "How old are these things anyway," she inspects the ripped parchment.

"S-Sensei told me these date back to the s-serpentine war," I answer.

"Mind if I read some too?" Nya asks.
