Chapter 3

The figure ran past the shadows and stopped with a jerk by the door, looking up at the plaque he clarified that this was his destination. Slowly opening the door he was hit with an icy breeze. Moving through the rebel base was of no difficulty at this hour, but the man before him looked like he was up for hours. The office they were in was a pale white with shelves adorning all the walls except one which had a window overlooking a restricted section.

“Was it successful Roy?” prods the man seated behind the desk. Roy nods with pleasure after his task to plant mines on the fuel tanks of the shuttle was a success. Chuckling with delight the man lays his palm out to Roy, he hands over the trigger to the man before a bullet’s gone through Roy’s head.

He kicks him aside before closing the door shut

…..

“Straight Ahead!” Amanda screeches as we evade another meteor. Sweat rolls down my forehead and my co-pilot’s shrieks don’t ease my agitation. My other co-pilot Mathew has a firm grip on my shoulders. I take a look at Amanda, curly blond hair braided down one side, kind grey eyes that reflected happiness. She was satisfied to find out that I would be there captain, but Mathew resented the fact that he would have to take orders from someone so young.

Exiting the meteor field I sit back and sigh in relief, I admire the cockpit, half a dome with three seats surrounded by controls. The reserve spacesuits were placed on the wall behind me. I relieve my duties to Mathew, a middle aged man with a bald head obscured with tattoos. His nose was crooked after a blow he took in training, he had dark cunning eyes which looked almost pitch black in the shuttle.

Strolling through the corridor I see one of the soldiers stand motionless by an entryway, I walk by feeling an air of authority as he salutes me. The corridors are narrow and the only light source is coming from a room at the end. Following it I see Lenard hard at work on an array of computers, his typing and taking of notes moves fluently in one mechanism.

“It doesn’t make sense!” Lenard whispers in frustration

“What?” I prod filled with curiosity,

Walking back to the cockpit I reflect over what Lenard was evaluating on. How did it get here? The planet’s appearance was suggested to be caused by a black hole, but after conducting tests he concluded it was not a black hole.

Mathew stands by the cockpit with a look of dread on his face, everyone else is gathered around a control panel. When I see what they are staring at I am filled with astonishment, they are looking at the life form scanner. Besides the group of seven huddled in the cockpit, there is a lone blob in the corner.

There is someone else on the shuttle.
