With a mumbled swear, you kicked into action. The world unmuffled around you and you propelled yourself forward as fast as you could go, bashing in rotted skulls as you went. If you could save Abbi quickly enough, there was a possibility you'd be able to make it to Seth as well. At least, that was what you told yourself so that you wouldn't feel like you were condemning one of your friends.
You knew that you actually were. When it came down to it, you had chosen to save Abbi over Seth. It was a terrible feeling.
Driven by your desire to have the ability to save both of them, you swung your pipe ferociously, taking down as many walkers as you could to thin out the crowd. Blood splattered back in your face and covered your clothes, accumulating with each new head crushed beneath your unforgiving attacks. It smelt horrid.
Walker after walker met their end as you advanced, eyes set on reaching Abbi. While still fighting, it was easy to see how tired she was and she appeared to have suffered some kind of head injury. A few walkers were dangerously close to her retreating form, making you move faster yet to reach her in time.
You breathed a sigh of relief after you took down the last threatening corpse. Abbi was panting heavily and once she was no longer in immediate danger she hunched over, hands on her knees, and struggled to regain her breath. Involuntary coughs broke out, sounding almost wet and full of liquid, which had you concerned for a second, but then you turned your attention to Seth.
He was still alive! You still had a chance! If you hurried, maybe you could-
You made it no more than two steps before a whining creak could be heard, then the scaffolding gave out. Seth screamed as it collapsed and you felt your heart drop into your stomach. Your steps faltered and all you could do was watch in horror as the walkers quickly closed in on him, ripping into his flesh as though it were no more than wet paper.
It was at this point that the guards killed off the last of the walkers trying to make their way in for the moment, so they finally turned their fire on the walkers feasting on Seth.
If they had only gotten to him half a minute sooner. . .
You brought your hands up to your face, covering your mouth in repulsion. Seth was still alive, but resembled a gory human version of a dog's favourite chew toy. He was making gurgling noises, mouth and lungs too filled with his own blood to be able to do anything else. His bloodshot eyes connected with yours and you could make out the pleading look he directed at you. He was suffering. He just wanted it to be over.
You found that you couldn't tear your eyes away even when a guard stepped forward to take the final shot. Your gaze remained on Seth's mangled corpse until another sound drew your attention.
More screaming.
Half of the guards left to go handle the new situation that had arisen. You wanted to follow them, but your knees chose right then to give out and you fell to the ground, hands instinctively going out to stabilize you. It took a few deep breaths to fight the nausea rising in the back of your throat and be able to somewhat compose yourself, pushing down the panic pumping through you due to the adrenaline rushing through you veins.
The next order of business was checking on Abbi. She claimed to be fine, waving off her coughing fits as being from too much exertion. When you asked about her head wound she explained that it had happened when the section of the wall that she and Seth had been expanding fell apart.
