~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being the prince of the Ocean was easy. You just had to smile at people and wave. Everyone adored you. Everyone adored the prince. Prince Matt of the Ocean kingdom. People thought he was so handsome and caring.
Even Matt thought those things. He knew he was loved and he knew people practically worshipped him. He could have any girl, or any guy, that he would like. But Matt was unhappy. As much as he loved spending hours looking at himself in mirrors or receiving compliments from the merfolk (Is this a real word?), Matt longed for adventure. He longed for adrenaline.
He longed to go up to the surface. It was forbidden for a mermaid to ever go up to the surface, in fear that they might make contact with a human. Humans were known as awful beasts who would skin the scales of a mermaid's tale and make clothing out of them. There were also tales of mermaids being experimented on. As much as these tales chilled Matt, he still felt as if there was something special waiting for him up there.
Matt swam out of his room and ran right into another mermaid. (Dont you love the fact im calling male mermaids mermaids instead of mermen?) It was his older brother, Prince Tom. People made sure to stay out of Tom's way. He didn't really like anybody and preferred to be alone. "Where are you rushing too?" Tom asked, rubbing his head. Matt looked away and put on a nervous smile. "Just going for a swim!" He lied. Tom studied him for a minute and then shook his head. "Liar," he said. "Where are you really going?"
Matt looked around to make sure no one was around. When he was confident that they were alone, he took Tom's hands and smiled. "I'm going to the surface!" Matt squealed. Tom's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "The surface?!" Tom questioned, making sure he had heard Matt correctly. Matt nodded with enthusiasm. "Do you wanna come with?" Matt asked. Tom thought for a minute and then nodded. He had always wanted to see the surface. And it was his responsibility to protect his little brother.
Matt smiled again and then turned to swim off, Tom following behind him. Matt was excited. He would finally be able to see the surface! Along with that tales of humans, there were also tales of the land. It is said that the sky is a bright blue that turns into a yellow-pink when the sun sets. The sun. That was another thing mermaids have been told about. It was this huge ball of fire that warmed the Earth, as well as the ocean. Many have dreamed of seeing it, including both Matt and Tom.
While swimming upwards, the brothers could notice the ocean's change in color. "Its because there's more sunlight up here," Tom said, looking around. Matt admired how smart Tom was. Eventually though, Matt got bored. He didn't just want to be near the surface. He wanted to be above. Matt turned to look at his brother, asking for approval. Tom nodded. The two than slowly swam up, until there eyes were above the water. They both looked around, to make sure they were alone. After they saw no signs of ships, or humans, they emerged even more. Now, they're heads and shoulders were exposed.
Matt looked around, a huge smile on his face. So far, he loved everything about the surface. Matt loved the sun, the air, the clouds. He was looking around for other things, when his eye caught a nearby beach. Matt tugged on Tom's arm and pointed towards the empty beach. "Do you see it?!" Matt excitedly asked. Tom nodded. The two swam closer to the beach, until it was within good eyesight. "Wonderful, isn't it?" Matt asked aloud. "The beaches here are far prettier. Im glad it's empty, that means we can look at it longer."
But the beach wasn't empty. A scientist named Tord had been walking along the beach when he heard splashes in the water, and then talking. He had taken the binoculars he has with him and looked out at the ocean, only to see two mermaids. (Mermen whatever) He had quickly hid behind a giant rock that was on the beach in order to not get caught. But he could still here them. The two of them were having a conversation.
One of the voices sounded older, mid thirties if Tord had to guess, and had a bit of an accent to it. That voice also sounded a bit more serious and his voice didn't contain a lot of emotion. The second voice however sounded younger, about twenty-ish. His voice contained wonder and passion. Just hearing it made Tord feel comforted. He peeked his head around, and got a perfect view of the two mermaids. One of them had plain black eyes, and pointy, light brown hair. His shoulders had blue scales instead of skin. The other one had ginger hair, that looked neatly combed, despite being wet. He had green eyes, and purple scales on his shoulders. His face was littered with freckles and something about the way he smiled made Tord feel all weird inside.
"Shit Tord, are you actually crushing om a mermaid?! What is wrong with you?!" Tord quietly shouted at himself. Unfortunately, Tom heard him. He panicked and yanked Matt behind his back. "Who are you!?" Tom shouted. "Come out now!" Tord froze and too began to panic. Matt clung to Tom's arm, and looked around for whoever Tom had heard. Tom decided to shout again. "We know you're here. Come out!" Matt let out a whimper. "Tom I'm scared," he whispered.
Tord heard the fear in his voice. He stepped out from behind the rock and put his hands up. "You don't need to be afraid," Tord said. "I'm not gonna hurt either of you." Matt listened to the guy's thick accent with interest, as Tom still remained in front of him. "How can we be sure?" he asked through gritted teeth. Tord let out a sigh. "Look, I'll just leave." Tord turned to walk away.
"Wait," Matt spoke out, moving to Tom's side. "Wont you stay a little longer? I've never seen a human before." Tord stopped at the sound of the young mermaids voice. He turned back around and looked at the two mermaids. He slowly walked to them, wading waist deep in the water. Tom flinched backward when Tord stuck his hand out, but Matt remained still. "I'm Tord," Tord introduced. Matt smiled. "I'm Matt. You have such a pretty name," Matt complimented, as he shook Tord's hand. A light pink dusted Tord's face as he looked away from Matt, and instead at Tom. Tom appeared to be rolling his eyes as he let out a small growl. "Tom."
"Matt and Tom," Tord said. "You two are mermaids?" Matt nodded as Tom just remained silent. "And you're a human?" Matt asked, his eyes sparkling with wonder and amazement. "Yes."
"All the tales are untrue!" Matt exclaimed as he happily swam in circles. Tom nodded as he watched Matt accidently hit most of his mirrors with his flailing arms. "That means Tord won't hurt us!" Matt let out a gasp. "That means we can go see him again!"
Tom patted Matt's head. "Maybe one day," he said, closing his eyes and remembered the way Tord would blush whenever Matt would speak. Or the way Matt's eyes lit up when Tord explained human customs to them.
"Maybe one day."
Guys Im gonna do a part two so don't worry :D
It will be more TordMatt than this
